Growing Up and Living in Ohio
I grew up in Ohio, and I still live here. Ohio is very important in every election. I have written many postcards to registered voters, asking them to vote. But I don’t put a Harris/Walz yard sign up because of the current political climate. I see big Trump flags in people’s yards, on their trucks, and even on t-shirts. It feels like a scary repeat of recent years.
The Problem with Gov. Mike DeWine’s Editorial
Today, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine wrote an editorial in the New York Times. He tried to defend Springfield’s Haitian community and explain why they belong here. But he also said he still supports the Trump/Vance ticket. His message was, “Even if you don’t like their tactics or think their claims are false, you can still vote for them.” This is a big problem with the Republican camp.
The Dangerous Mindset of the Republican Camp
Many GOP lawmakers, rich donors, and ordinary citizens say, “He’s awful, he has no vision, he has no policy, we cringe at his every move, but we will still vote for him.” This mindset is dangerous. It hurts democracy, critical thinking, and moral behavior.
Why We Must Change This Mindset
We absolutely must change this tone-deaf and dangerous mindset in the U.S. It’s not just bad for democracy; it’s bad for critical thinking and moral behavior. We need to turn the corner and make better choices for our future.
