Ukrainian Forces Strike Russian Fuel Depots

If it’s a day ending in Y, there is a fuel depot on fire somewhere in Russia.

The Russian fuel depot successfully struck by Ukrainian forces yesterday in Rostov continued to burn overnight, with a series of secondary explosions setting additional storage tanks on fire. Russian authorities are reportedly highly concerned about losing the entire facility.

Pavel Durov’s Arrest and Its Impact

A French judge released Telegram CEO/founder Pavel Durov from detention, but Russians are still freaked about his arrest. Can they trust him now? Did he sing like a canary?

Durov is still charged with crimes but has been released on bail and his passports were confiscated.

Clearly, the Pavel Durov situation is having an impact on the Russian military, with influential propagandists saying they will never be sure about Telegram again after those few days in the French jail.

Will we trust Telegram as before? The truth is that no matter how the events around Durov develop now, we will never be able to be sure of the messenger’s security.

Whether he makes a deal and avoids criminal prosecution, gets 10 years, flees to the UAE or Russia. There will always be an assumption that in the first few days of his arrest, the French (though, of course, not the French) managed to get what they wanted from Durov.

They could do dozens of interviews about how the developers changed the encryption keys after Pavel’s arrest. That he acted according to a previously thought-out security algorithm and leaked temporary keys to the Americans, misleading them. That he threatened Western elites with dirt collected in Telegram.

But this assumption of the first three days will not go away. And now we need to keep it in mind. But, of course, we all want our cozy little Telezhenka to remain as safe and independent as it was before Pavel Durov was detained. And we wish him a speedy return to Russia, because for him it is the safest country.

And I, as a law-abiding citizen, will feel calmer if the FSB, and not the CIA, gets theoretical access to my correspondence.

Better not go back to Russia, Pavel.

Challenges in Ukrainian Leadership

Yes, the West has dragged its feet about supplying what Ukraine needs and has clutched its pearls about attacking Russia. But Ukraine has problems of its own making that need to be corrected, and that is evident at Pokrovsk.

I do not believe the situation is caused by lack of infantry or lack of ammo or any other excuse being floated around. I believe blame rests squarely on leadership. Both civilian and military. They have made endless mistakes, and Russia is taking advantage.

Instead of accepting blame, admitting mistakes, and working to address those mistakes, everyone is pointing fingers and blaming everyone else. This behavior is pathetic and stopping Ukraine from finding solutions. And the people amplifying these arguments are contributing to the problem.

It has been incredibly frustrating seeing people endlessly seethe over these finger-pointings, highlighting anonymous statements and anecdotes. It is toxic and counterproductive.

Blaming lack of ammo, or lack of men, or lack of this or lack of that. How about the commanders who never empowered the NCOs under their command? How about officers who never instilled the training and discipline to ensure the replacement soldiers were as good as the people they were replacing? How about the officers who failed to set up robust communications between adjacent units in their battalion or brigade? How about the officers who are incorrectly reporting information up the chain of command? Or the commanders who punish their subordinates for giving them bad news? What about these personal responsibilities that were ignored, trivialized, and never addressed?

And now you have a disaster that you see now, where people aren’t communicating, people aren’t working together. At the time when they need communication and teamwork more than ever before. Don’t point fingers at others, look inward and address your own shortcomings, and give the people around you the grace to do the same. And maybe then you can start to unfuck the situation and stabilize things.

Missteps at Pokrovsk and Ocheretyne

This is another long thread that discusses Ukraine’s missteps at Pokrovsk and Ocheretyne.

The Russian Armed Forces are actively advancing in the Pokrovsk direction. It is being done at great cost, but the problem also exists in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. There are objective problems that the Ukrainian army is facing, and there are internal ones. The objective:

Here is what Ukrainian military man Stanislav Bunyatov writes now: “The point is not that we are moving somewhere and therefore the Pokrovsk direction is crumbling. Brigade commanders simply cannot organize interaction and set up a competent defense. If the commander is a blockhead, then 20 people will retreat from their positions just like 5. What is the point of throwing a bunch of people into a populated area without preparing it for defense?”. A similar situation is in the Toretsk direction, notes a Ukrainian military man nicknamed “Officer”: “The level of stupidity of some commanders in the Toretsk direction is a little “impressive”. People are simply too high up and do not consider it necessary to delve into the essence of the situation and interact with junior commanders. And the funniest thing is that such star fever is not even at the brigade level, but at the battalion level. Toretsk and Niu-York are now held solely by the strength and courage of our guys.”

Incentives for Corruption in Russian Police

I’m sure there won’t be any abuse of this program. 🙄

Cop to homeless guy: Congratulations! You have just enlisted to serve Mother Russia. Die well.

1/ Moscow police are to be paid a 50,000 ruble ($558) bounty for each person they ‘persuade’ to sign up for military service, including immigrants and homeless people. The initiative will create more incentives for corruption for Russia’s already notoriously corrupt police. ⬇️
