Donald Trump is losing support from an important conservative group in Arizona. This is because of his questionable personal behavior, his constant lies, and his attack on the U.S. Constitution.

I visited the community of Snowflake to put up signs in support of our “No King” campaign.

Many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that the U.S. Constitution was directly ordained by God. Trump’s attempts to undermine the Constitution have people concerned. He has tried to influence the Supreme Court over “immunity,” attacked the U.S. Capitol, and stated that there would be no need for future elections.
Community Concerns
A congregation, called a “Ward” by the church, usually has at least one extreme member of the John Birch Society variety. The rest of the congregation generally ranges from center-right to extreme right. Some resent that former Sen. Jeff Flake, a local hero in this town, was forced out of office by the MAGA extremists in the party.
Wider Concerns in Arizona
Though Snowflake is a modest-sized rural town, the concerns about Trump are also common in the much larger Mormon community of Mesa, one of the principal suburbs of Phoenix. There, Mayor John Giles is actually supporting Kamala Harris.
Significance of the Mormon Community
About 6% of Arizonans belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That may seem small, but it’s the second largest religious group in the state, behind only Catholics. There are more than 7 million people in the state, so 6% of that is not tiny. And consider Joe Biden won Arizona by 11,000 votes. The significance of this community of 350,000 comes into focus.

I enjoyed my visit to Snowflake. Strangers went out of their way to greet me. If anyone was unhappy with the work I was doing there, they didn’t mention it.

“People in my moderate circle of friends are watching and saying, ‘I can no longer do this,’” said Mike Badgett, one of the men in Mesa who was speculating about a greater shift toward Democrats. “I think the wheels are coming off of this agreement.”
Mr. Badgett was referring to the uneasy alliance between Mr. Trump and deeply religious voters. For years, many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints supported Mr. Trump, often reluctantly. They were turned off by his vulgarity, his disdain for women, and his attacks on immigrants, which go against the church’s pro-immigrant, pro-refugee message.
