My Journey of Political Activism
Since the 2006 midterm elections, I have made it a point to engage in political activism during every election cycle. Along with voting and donating what I can, I find ways to make my voice heard. Before I dive into my current activism inspired by Freeway Blogger, let me share a bit about myself.
Who Am I?
I’m a 55-year-old GenX woman living in Gwinnett County, Georgia. I identify as a liberal, atheist, straight, and I proudly use she/her pronouns. I am a Southern white woman, happily married for the second time, and a proud mother of two amazing GenZ young adults. I also have a rescue dog and cat. After years in marketing and running my own startup, I consider myself “retired.” I’ve been a lifelong Democrat and a proud UGA alumna—Go Dawgs!
Staying Engaged in Politics
As a reliable Democratic voter, I stay informed about politics thanks to this wonderful community. A big thank you to Markos for creating such a safe and informative space. Even when disagreements arise, he keeps us on track, which is no easy task!
Though I’m currently more active on Twitter, I always return to this blog because I love the diverse and passionate group of people here who share a commitment to progressive values.
My Activism in 2022
In 2022, I dedicated my time to volunteering for five local candidates. However, with the stakes so high in this election, I realized that my stress levels wouldn’t allow me to be directly involved in candidate campaigns.
Channeling My Activism
Inspired by Freeway Blogger’s creative approach, I decided to use my body as a walking sign to show my support for Democratic candidates. I’ve put out many signs in the past, including over 100 in 2022 for local candidates and Senator Warnock. But putting up signs can be risky, especially as a woman alone. The fear of encountering aggressive individuals or getting hurt is real.
Challenges of Political Signage
In my part of Georgia, it’s not safe to display Democratic signs in my yard. I’ve experienced firsthand the dangers of showing my political beliefs, like when my tire was slashed after I put a Biden bumper sticker on my car. Additionally, any signs I put up on public property are often taken down quickly by those opposed to our values. This makes it feel pointless to invest time and money in signs that disappear almost immediately.
Wearing My Support Proudly
Instead, I’ve embraced wearing my Harris/Walz shirts in public. Over the past month and a half, I’ve had some encouraging experiences while sporting my political gear in Gwinnett and Forsyth Counties.
1. Positive Reactions
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive! Many compliments come from white men, followed closely by white women. It’s heartening to see support in one of the most diverse counties in the nation.
2. Compliments Galore
People often ask, “Where did you get your hat? I love it!” I bought it at a local gift shop, and it pairs perfectly with my Harris/Walz shirt. I ordered several shirts online as soon as Walz was announced as VP to show my support.
3. Smiles and Nods
I don’t seek out interactions; I simply wear my shirt and observe. I’ve noticed many double-takes and smiles from people who notice my shirt. It’s a subtle way to connect with others who share my values.
4. No Negative Comments
Surprisingly, I haven’t received any negative comments or gestures. I expected backlash, but instead, I’ve only encountered a few eye-rolls or people avoiding eye contact. I believe they might feel embarrassed to support Trump and Republicans, and I’m glad they see that I stand against them.
5. Standing Out
In all my outings, I’ve yet to see anyone else wearing political merchandise. I thought I’d encounter Trump supporters, but I haven’t seen any. Instead, I see more Harris stickers than Trump ones, which gives me hope.
6. Shouts of Support
While at the Mall of Georgia, people shouted, “I like your shirt!” from across the atrium. It felt amazing to receive such support, especially since I was the only one wearing political gear.
7. A Special Moment
One of my favorite moments happened at Publix. A little girl saw my shirt and lit up with excitement. She nudged her brother to look at me, and we shared a smile. It was a beautiful moment that reminded me of the importance of representation.
Why This Matters
Even though some may think wearing a t-shirt isn’t significant, I believe it truly matters. Each day, I make dozens of impressions, showing where I stand in this election. I hope my presence gives others hope, especially people of color who notice a white woman supporting Harris/Walz.
Some Republicans may feel triggered by my shirt, and that’s okay. It’s essential for them to see that not everyone agrees with their views.
Join Me in Showing Support
If you’re looking for a way to show your support in these final weeks leading up to the election, consider wearing your Harris/Walz merchandise in public. It’s an affordable and accessible way to express solidarity and make a difference.
Lastly, wish me luck as I wear my shirt through Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport tomorrow for a flight to Denver. I’m excited to make even more impressions!
