Exciting Times in Salt Lake City: Early Voting Begins!

I’m reporting from Salt Lake City, Utah—a bright blue dot in a sea of red. Today, October 22, marks the start of early in-person voting, and I couldn’t be more excited!

Voting Made Easy for Everyone

In Utah, every registered voter receives a ballot in the mail. This means that going to vote in person is not necessary, but many people still enjoy the experience. I received my ballot last Thursday, just a week after they were mailed out. It’s great to see how easy it is to participate in our democracy!

The local culture, especially influenced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often called the Mormons), places a strong emphasis on voting. As someone who was born and raised in this community, I can tell you that voting has always been important here. In Salt Lake City, long lines are rare, making it convenient for everyone to cast their vote.

My Voting Experience Today

Today, I stood in line, which had about ten people ahead of me. While I did spot a couple wearing MAGA hats (you know, “Make America Great Again”), they were definitely the exception. Salt Lake City is known for its liberal views, and I was happy to see many friendly faces around me.

One of the highlights of my day was meeting a kind woman who helped me get set up to vote. I shared with her how Dupuytren’s contracture has changed my signature, and to my surprise, she showed me her surgery scar! This made me feel more confident about considering surgery myself. Even though the signing process was digital and didn’t look great, I realized that having a photo ID is what really matters.

Hope for a Brighter Future

Leaving the voting station, I felt a sense of hope for Utah. It seems like the influence of Trump is fading; I hardly see signs for him anymore, and even the Republican governor is facing a right-wing write-in challenge. But the best part? Every single contest on my ballot had a Democratic candidate! This is a first for me in Salt Lake City, and it fills me with joy.

Community Spirit in Action

Just the other day, I visited a local library and saw a woman dropping off her ballot. Utah makes it super easy with drop boxes at libraries and government offices. I could tell she wanted someone to share in her relief as she voted. My spouse and I cheered her on as she celebrated and drove away. It’s these small moments that remind us of the power of community and the importance of participating in our democracy.
