Weathering the Storm in St. Pete
Just a quick note to share my experience during the recent hurricane that hit St. Petersburg. As many of you know, our community was severely affected by the storm.
Staying Safe Amidst the Chaos
The buses have stopped running, and it’s not safe to walk around much due to downed power lines. I can only see what’s happening in my immediate area, which is the mobile home park where I live. We took quite a beating from the storm.
Damage in the Neighborhood
Many homes suffered significant damage. Some have roofs peeled off, carports missing, siding torn away, and trees uprooted. Personally, I’m okay physically, but my neighbor’s tree landed on my roof, and some siding was peeled away. I don’t think the tree broke through the roof, but I won’t know for sure until it’s removed. Many of my neighbors are in worse shape, so I’m not a high priority right now.
Utilities and Connectivity Challenges
Water was out for most of the day but has thankfully returned. However, power is still out for most of us. I’m currently at a local McDonald’s, one of the few places open, but there’s no place to charge my laptop here. My battery is running low, so I might be out of touch until power and Wi-Fi are restored at home.
Community Resilience
The silver lining is that, as far as I know, nobody in my complex was hurt. I spoke with 7 or 8 people who stayed to ride out the storm, and they all said they would never do that again. It’s a relief to know everyone is safe, and we can focus on rebuilding and supporting each other.
