President Donald Trump has been talking to his friends about possibly asking Attorney General Jeff Sessions to prosecute Robert Mueller, the special counsel overseeing the Russia probe, and his team, NBC News reported.
Fineman quotes an unnamed Trump advisor as saying: “Here’s how it would work: ‘We’re sorry, Mr. Mueller, you won’t be able to run the federal grand jury today because he has to go testify to another federal grand jury.’”
It’s unclear what charges Mueller could possibly face in such a situation.
The country is closer to armed conflict than we might otherwise think.
To be sure, it’s just Trump talking, and who knows which voice in his head had control of the mouth at that point, but does anyone here put it past Trump to attempt this? Wouldn’t we all love to believe that such an order would immediately cause the invocation of a 25th Amendment meeting of the cabinet, that or the quickest impeachment proceeding ever.
But, both those scenarios assume good-faith on the part of Republicans, something I am no longer willing to assume.
It seems absurd, but consider Trump’s need for his money. If the Russian investigation looked to be threatening not just Trump’s presidency, but also threatening his accumulated wealth (to the extent he has any), then I doubt there is a limit on what Trump is wiling to do in an attempt to save himself.
Remember, the one thing that Trump does not care the least bit about is the country, long or short term. The Trump presidency is about Trump, not you, me, the country or the world, and Trump will burn all of the same to save Trump.
