Trump Cancels G-7 At Doral, Biographer Says He’s ‘Running Scared’

Donald Trump wants us all to know that he was only thinking of us, when he scheduled the 2020 G-7 Summit at his failing Doral facility. Boy, are we a bunch of ingrates.

My guess is that Jay Sekulow, or maybe even Bill Shine, after talking to a couple of lawyers, realized the hopelessness of the can of worms that had been opened and persuaded Trump to roll over. Or maybe they told him to look on the positive side, it will be one less front to fight the war on. He’s still got impeachment, Ukraine, Syria, who needed this on top of it? This one is way waaaaay too cut and dried to fly. John Cassidy, New Yorker:

As President, Trump is exempted from federal conflict-of-interest of laws, but not from Article 1, Section 9 of the Constitution—the so-called emoluments clause—which says that no federal official can accept an emolument (money or anything else of value) from a foreign government, without the approval of Congress. Since Trump owns Doral, and the official delegations to the G-7 summit routinely pay for their accommodations, the violation is clear cut—so clear cut that, on Friday, even the White House acknowledged it by claiming that the resort would charge summit attendees only enough to cover its expenses. “Everything will be done at cost due to the emoluments clause,” the White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said, in an e-mail to the Washington Post.

But, of course, that doesn’t resolve the issue. Since the Trump Organization is a private company, there is no way of knowing what its real costs are. Furthermore, the value to the Doral resort of staging the summit goes far beyond the fees it would receive. According to an analysis by the Washington Post, from earlier this year, the resort’s business has gone into steep decline since Trump decided to run for office. For a struggling leisure enterprise, there is an incalculable publicity value to hosting world leaders for a weekend, and having the world’s media descend upon it. Moreover, as Shaub also pointed out to me, the White House has provided virtually no information about how it chose Doral, and what criteria it employed. Federal procurement decisions are subject to strict conflict-of-interest laws. If the officials who took part in the decision-making process didn’t abide by these laws, they could be in serious trouble—even if Trump evades responsibility, as he usually does.

I think that Trump had taken some serious scratches to his Teflon coating this past week. This is a very positive development.

It was never going to fly and was a complete attempt at distraction to get a reaction from the media so when he changed his mind as was inevitable he could again blame the media. Seriously you have seen this play, time and time again in many different forms and the media seems to always play his game, if they don’t clue up he will continue to lead them and point them in the direction he wants them to go and then ridicule them for going there. Granted some parts of the media have clued up in relation to when… Read more »

He probably got an RSVP from Trudeau & Macron (and Melania) refusing to attend on account of the bedbug situation. He was afraid he’d look bad if he couldn’t even get our closest allies to show up. This whole Doral situation was probably supposed to distract from the impeachment & the fact that he surrendered unconditionally to the enemy, abandoned our allies, & slunk off with our tail between our legs as losers just like the president. Loser.
