On August 8th, 1974, in a prime time speech to the nation from the Oval Office, Richard Nixon officially announced his resignation from the office of President of the United States, to take effect at noon the next day. The next morning, Nixon gave an emotional farewell speech to his staff, after which the entire west wing staff spilled out onto the lawn to see Nixon off as he turned at the top of the stairs, and with a smile that never quite reached his eyes, made his signature “V” sign and boarded Marine One to start the lonely journey home to isolation and disgrace.

At around 3:45 pm EDT on Wednesday, December 23rd, Donald John Trump, the most hated, reviled, divisive, racist, autocratic, anti democratic President in history, waddled out of the White House in his signature, ridiculous 1930’s black overcoat with his wife, shambled his way almost aimlessly over the grass of the south lawn, waving absently a couple of times to reporters, and boarded Marine One for the start of his trip to Palm Beach for his Christmas vacation at Mar-A-Lago. And immediately begged the question, Have we just watched Donald Trump leave the White House for the last time?

In all honesty, I don’t know. But I strongly think so. Because there is absolutely nothing left for Donald Trump in Washington DC. The simple fact that Trump has started issuing the kind of mass pardons for everybody who ever kissed his ass shows that even he realizes that he will be vacating the Oval Office on January 20th. Trump vetoed the Defense Authorization Act. On Monday and Tuesday of next week, the House and Senate will reconvene to override his veto, and it will become law. Where he is sitting at the moment is immaterial, he will suffer his first veto override in his last three weeks in office. Yet another humbling defeat for the alleged Master of the Deal.

As Rachel Maddow reported tonight, Trump can wreak havoc on the combined Covid relief bill and government funding package simply by sitting on his fat ass in Florida and doing nothing for the next 10 days. That would scuttle the bill, as well as effectively shut down the federal government. Once again, no skin off of his nose, and something he can just as well enjoy remotely from Mar-A-Lago as go back to Washington for. I personally believe that Trump would love nothing more than to tank both Loeffler as well as Perdue in the January 5th run offs, just so ling as he didn’t end up  being the only GOP loser in Georgia.

Since November 7th, when Joe Biden was pronounced the winner, Trump has basically abdicated the throne. Mar-A-Lago is completely outfitted. There is nothing that Trump can’t do from his gilt schlock palace in Florida that he can’t from the Oval Office. The simple fact that Trump has started his Pardon-a-palooza 28 days before his term ends tells me that he already realized that pardons are the only thing left that he can hope to accomplish in the last month. And he can just as well grant them from Mar-A-Lago as from Washington.

Right now, the “official” White House schedule shows Trump returning to Washington on either January 1st or 2nd. Why? On January 5th, a joint session of congress will meet to certify the electoral college cote for Biden. There is nothing that either he or his pointy headed cronies can do to stop that. Trump has called for the Loud Toys, along with the bucket heads and bed sheet models to show up in the streets of Washington on January 5th to protest, but Trump himself has no stomach for violence, he is the ultimate chickenshit. Why would he want to be in town for the last nail in his political coffin?

Here’s why I think we’ve seen the last of Trump in Washington DC. If Trump returns from Mar-A-Lago on or after January 1st, he is a marked man. He is the ultimate dead man walking, and his every step will be recorded for history. Whether Trump finally chooses to go to the inauguration or not, he will have to leave the White House on January 20th for the last time. And cameras will be there to record the moment.

And I honestly don’t believe that Donald John Trump has the balls for it. Trump is the most pathetic, shallowest man I have ever seen. Say what you will, I just don’t see him standing inside the swinging doors of the portico, taking a deep breath, steeling himself for the moment, and then walking out, shoulders squared, head held high, smiling and waving to his last press pool as he heads for Marine One for the last time. He just doesn’t have the belly for it.

Today was easy. Today was nothing more than just another one in an endless string of strolls across the south lawn, and off to Mar-A-Lago for yet another extended stay of golf and debauchery. There was no pressure, nothing unusual, hell, he has another month left to go yet in his term. Business as usual. And I find it highly likely that the ultimate chickenshit will be more than happy to just leave it at that.

  1. If he stays in Mar-a-Lago, we can sing with gusto, “Thank God and greyhound, he’s gone!” (From an old song by Roy Clark)

  2. How long can he stay there. It appears there are only so many days a year he can be there. When his job ends that kicks in. Has he booked a flight to russia?
