A Corner Turned: Trump May Well Not Get Through Impeachment

One must be cautious about saying something that may sound like hyperbole. But the picture changed today with the release of the Lev Parnas materials. I know that much, whether it results in Trump’s ultimate removal or not is a more difficult question. The documents/texts from Robert Hyde (a Giuliani associate, a huge Trump donor who hangs out at Trump’s clubs) referencing Ukrainians surveilling a United States ambassador, including phones and computers, without notifying embassy security, along with the texts referring to the famous corruption fighter as a f**king b**** all alongside the fact that the State Department told Yovanovitch to be on the plane within hours because there were concerns for her safety, is damned haunting. It sure puts a new coat upon Trump saying that Yovanovitch was “going to go through some things.” Now, none of this is confirmed, other than it came from Parnas, purportedly from Hyde. So, until it is confirmed, and until Parnas can testify to the context of everything, we need to be cautious to a certain extent. But Parnas knows that this material could possibly take down a United States president, and has to know that the authenticity of the evidence will be worked through by the most expert technicians in the world. Parnas is also trying to save his own ass which is in deep trouble. it is far more likely than not that it is real. Chris Hayes just brought up the fact that the line about Ukrainians following her with the quote that in the Ukraine one can get anything for money, makes one just shiver. It is possible, just possible, that they were going to harm her and make it appear it was some random crime in the Ukraine. It is also possible that Robert Hyde was simply trying to impress Giuliani and company that he was that on top of her. But even if so, no one jumped on him to say “knock it off, stop this.” It is possible that Hyde is completely nuts and was lying about surveilling her. But you also have to consider that a lot of oligarchs in Russia and Ukraine hated her for her anti-corruption fight, as well as Trump’s words. “She is going to go through some things,” something that really doesn’t make a lot of sense. She’d already been fired when Trump talked to Zelensky. This is the type of evidence that completely changes the picture in the case against Trump. It sounds like mob bosses talking. It sounds like they wanted to get rid of a problem. There is no doubt they wanted her gone from the job, fired, they were pounding on the need to fire her. None of that is disputed. If Trump’s political “gamesmanship” and self-obsession put Yovanovitch in harms way – and she was told to get out, fast, because a security threat arose – if it all checks out, I don’t see how Trump remains in office. I suspect even Republicans will consider him disgraced. At a minimum, he won’t win the election if all this is genuine. The most base of the base aren’t leaving Trump, but a lot of people will. If I had to bet, there is a ton of truth in this stuff. Hyde’s comment upon the release of the material […]

Impeachment Isn’t About One Phone Call In July, Trump Started Shaking Down Ukraine in 2017

Seth Abramson points out in a lengthy Twitter feed, which is replicated below from his website, that Mick Mulvaney first colluded with Donald Trump to withhold aid from Ukraine in 2017. The Daily Beast did an article on that, stating that Trump requested the hold on aid so as “not to upset” Russia. Pandering to Vladimir Putin’s whims has been a mainstay of this administration, as we are coming to find out more and more each day. Wait… everyone knows Trump had Mulvaney put a block on military aid to Ukraine in *2017 also*, right? And that the stated reason at the time was Trump didn't want to "upset Russia"? Everyone knows that, right? Media has made it perfectly clear, I assume? https://t.co/cXinpmaGvf — Seth Abramson (@SethAbramson) December 24, 2019 1/ Because, you know, golly, if media *hadn’t* been hammering this point home daily, it might well give the GOP an opportunity to falsely argue that the whole impeachment is about “one phone call” and that Trump has *no history* of blocking military aid to Ukraine via Mulvaney. –  2/ The Ukraine scandal is *insanely* complex. My research suggests it’s *more* complex than the Russia case—which was already wild as hell…but media *must* find a way to explain it to America during this “lull” in the impeachment story. *Teach* America about the Naftogaz angle.  – 3/ Here’s the simple version: Trump has been laundering campaign donations using Giuliani and Parnas in exchange for helping the two men do business in Ukraine. All of which is part of a shakedown of Ukraine to politically *and* financially benefit Trump, Putin…and nobody else.  – 4/ The Ukraine scandal begins in *March 2016*. Yes—I’m serious. Trump has been scheming over how to use Ukraine to his benefit for *over four and a half years*. The July 25 Zelensky call was a *minor episode* in a *years-long* course of conduct that was criminal, start to finish.  – 5/ Within *two days* of pro-Kremlin operative-in-Ukraine Paul Manafort joining Trump’s campaign in March 2016, Trump—whose only Ukraine policy to that point was “let Russia have Crimea without penalty”—was *directing his national security team* to deep-six all lethal aid to Kyiv.  – 6/ So Kremlin agent Manafort—who signed a deal with Putin lieutenant Deripaska in 2006 to aid Putin in America; Google it—joins Trump’s campaign and *immediately* Trump is *proactively* setting up an anti-Ukraine foreign policy that goes *beyond* opposing sanctions on Russia.  – 7/ Within *days* of Russia’s hack of the DNC being caught, that same Kremlin agent—Manafort—is telling Trump Ukraine did it, not Russia, and Trump is going on the stump and saying “no one knows” who did the hack. Folks, this… *isn’t* rocket science for a criminal investigator.  – 8/ Trump then spends the next two years trying to ensure Manafort doesn’t talk to the feds… partly by *threatening Ukraine* out of assisting Mueller. And that includes blocking military aid to Ukraine…*in 2017*. And yet we’re pretending this is all about one call in mid-2019?  – 9/ I mean *jeez*, do people realize Mulvaney was only *made* Trump’s acting chief of staff in December 2018 (but Trump made *sure* he kept his OMB job!) *because* Mulvaney helped Trump shake down Ukraine in late 2017 and early 2018? That is *how Mulvaney got his damn job*, folks.  – 10/ Trump knew *in March 2016* that Ukraine could be […]

BUSTED: Evidence Shows Trump and Sondland Are LYING About Second Call

I know it’s a bit dicey, but get down in the weeds with me for a bit and I will help you understand how it is that the White House and Gordon Sondland have had their legs wiped out from under them in the Ukraine “defense.” You likely know that Ambassador Sondland testified to two phone calls with Trump about the quid pro quo, two days apart, one on September 7th and one on the 9th. We all sort of assumed that Sondland told the truth about everything because he had sold Trump out so badly in his “indeed their was a quid pro quo.” But remember, this man had to “re-remember” many things, and he either kept a few “good parts” in for Trump, or just go so crosswise he couldn’t remember what he was doing. The important thing to note is that the Republicans used his “remembered” second phone call on the 9th as a big part of their defense. iThe Trump administration believed this purported “second phone call” helped it a great deal in the Ukrainian scandal. The problem however is that the second phone call never occurred, according to an analysis of the evidence done by Just Security. Indeed, not only did the second call not occur, upon analyzing the “only call” in a proper light, it shows Trump was directly involved in negotiations about the quid pro quo and personally vetoed an option offered by Ukraine. First, let’s set out the purported two phone calls for clarity. The first phone call supposedly took place on September 7: The call occurred on September 7th. In this call, Trump did say there was “no quid pro quo” with Ukraine, but he then went on to outline his preconditions for releasing the security assistance and granting a White House visit. The call was so alarming that when John Bolton learned of it, he ordered his’ deputy Tim Morrison to immediately report it to the National Security Council lawyers. So, no matter what Trump might’ve said about “no quid pro quo,” the September 7th call had enough “conditions” on what Zelensky needed to do (a quid pro quo) that Bolton panicked and had it reported. According to Sondland and the White House, Trump had a second phone call with Sondland on September 9th. Sondland has testified there was a call on September 9th in which Trump said there was “no quid pro quo,” but that he wanted President Zelenskyy “to do” the right thing. A close reading of the publicly available evidence shows that the latter call was actually the very one that sent Morrison to the lawyers, and that Ambassador Bill Taylor foregrounded in his written deposition to inform Congress of the quid pro quo. To the extent that the White House has a defense, it is that no one testified directly to the president doing any of the acts constituting a quid pro quo on the aid money or a Zelensky trip to the White House. The defense relies heavily upon the “September 9th phone call as proof. Sondland testified that he had a quick call with Trump on September 9th: I asked him one open-ended question: What do you want from Ukraine? And as I recall, he was in a very bad mood. It was a […]
