As somebody who grew up on science fiction and fantasy, I’m thinking that perhaps I have failed to fully appreciate the finer points of Fox News, specifically that there are people of great imagination there. I’ve never seen that level of imagination applied to journalism before, but I marvel at it now, as I watch these creative minds pulling facts out of sheer air and wedding them to fantasy. I reach this conclusion, because Laura Ingraham’s latest spin on Donald Trump as friend of the black man, a corollery to the friend of the working man illusion, is the most sublime spin I have seen in many a day. If you missed this, Ingraham manages to conflate Trump being investigated by Robert Mueller with George Floyd being suffocated in the street. Here is her “reasoning.” And you already know that the spin is directed at Trump’s need to woo black voters to vote for him in November. Politico: The president and his top allies are trying to fit his election-year interests in black voters into a political career filled with encouragements of police power. The latest moves come amid outcry over Minneapolis resident George Floyd, a 43-year-old African American man who died in police custody on Monday after being pinned to the pavement by a white police officer who kept his knee pressed on Floyd’s neck. In the aftermath of the incident, Trump called for an expedited federal investigation into Floyd’s death. The move drew praise from some longtime supporters of the “Blue Lives Matter” movement, who suggested the president could identify with the perceived injustice because of his own history of being investigated by law enforcement. “Given his own experience with an out-of-control FBI and unfair investigations… President Trump knows how poisonous an out-of-control law enforcement process can be,” Fox News personality Laura Ingraham, a close ally of the White House, said on her program Thursday night. Isn’t that a great piece of make believe? Maybe Team Trump should commission an artist to do a sketch of Trump handcuffed on the ground and Mueller with a knee on his neck and caption it, “Donald Trump Has Been There.” Yes, black voters, Trump feels your pain. This is the same Trump, bear in mind, who called NFL players “sons of bitches” when they chose to kneel during football games, encouraged arresting police officers to be “rough” and pardoned Joe Arpaio, that great promoter of racial justice, remember him? The football players who took a knee to symbolize their protest of police brutality against unarmed black men were sons of bitches then, now they’re comrades in arms, or so we are to believe. But not everybody is buying this. “I would caution folks who make the leap that all of a sudden Trump, and by extension Republicans, are turning a corner on black voters because he expressed a desire that justice be done in the killing of Floyd,” former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele said in an interview Thursday, before Trump threatened to send National Guard personnel to Minneapolis. Steele, a Trump critic, said Trump’s initial response was taken at “face value” but likely wouldn’t translate to “bonus points for the November election.” Black voters won’t soon forget the president’s well-documented comments and history of discriminating against African Americans, he said. Sometimes people in Washington get it plain wrong!
If conservatives support police killing citizens without justification, climate denial, fact denial, science denial, racist and misogynistic behavior, or a litany of other absurd points of view about numerous important issues, we call them out.
