Donald Trump punches down all the time, because he’s a jerk. But punching down at the Lincoln Project Tuesday, was the stupidest move that he could have made, because it plays right into their hands and they are loving it. If you missed this particular Trumpian debacle, Tuesday, it’s all summarized for you below, where Rick Wilson chats with Lawrence O’Donnell. Basically, the Lincoln Project did an ad that Trump didn’t like, so he rage tweeted and then he called them losers some more when he was about to get on Marine One — typical Trump response, in other words. But in this case, it’s having the effect of making Trump’s enemy, the Lincoln Project, more powerful. As CNN’s Chris Cillizza put it, quoting Game of Thrones, “A lion does not concern itself with the opinions of the sheep.” Trump just can’t act like a lion, because he’s not, even though he’s in the world’s most powerful job. That is the essence of this tragi-farce. Trump is a mouse — or rather a rat — in a lion’s job. CNN: Think Trump is letting the sheep bother him? Uh, yeah. – I can just imagine the folks at the Lincoln Project high-fiving when they read Trump’s tweets. And dancing a jig when he talked about them — and their ad — before getting on Marine One. – This is their ideal scenario. They literally don’t have the money to buy this sort of publicity for their ad. Now lots of people who read Trump’s tweets or saw him blasting the Lincoln Project outside the White House on Tuesday will got to their computers and look up “Lincoln Project.” And watch the “Mourning in America” ad. – It’s a gigantic win for what is, in truth, a small group of prominent talking heads who were — and Trump is right about this — roundly crushed by him and his allies during the 2016 campaign. – Trump’s inability to ignore renegade voices within his party is a violation of the most basic of campaign rules. The more he talks about the Lincoln Project — no matter how negatively — the better for the group’s profile and ability to raise money to oppose his reelection. – Trump’s best strategy toward dissenting voices within his own party would be to ignore them and stay silent. But that’s not really a skill he possesses.
Maybe Donald Trump’s staff hid the new Lincoln Project “Mourning in America” ad from him. The rest of the world saw it early Monday and Trump apparently got hold of it late at night, because he went into one of his now-routine Twitter meltdowns in the wee hours. ….get even for all of their many failures. You see, these loser types don’t care about 252 new Federal Judges, 2 great Supreme Court Justices, a rebuilt military, a protected 2nd Amendment, biggest EVER Tax & Regulation cuts, and much more. I didn’t use any of them…. — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 5, 2020 ….lost for Evan “McMuffin” McMullin (to me). Steve Schmidt & Reed Galvin lost for John McCain, Romney’s campaign manager (?) lost big to “O”, & Jennifer Horn got thrown out of the New Hampshire Republican Party. They’re all LOSERS, but Abe Lincoln, Republican, is all smiles! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 5, 2020 Retaliation was swift and beautiful. Dear Mr. President: My friend @WindsorMann, who gave me the idea that we do a “Mourning in America” (not “Morning”) ad, is sad you didn’t rage-tweet at him. Could you take a moment from your busy day of abject self-pity to attack him? Many thanks. Love,Your friend,Moonface https://t.co/FUZr78PfIO pic.twitter.com/V5z2Wr0emO — George Conway, Noble Committee Chair (@gtconway3d) May 5, 2020 I guess our next ad should be “Moron in America.”@ProjectLincoln@realDonaldTrump https://t.co/b4GDxIqNT0 — George Conway, Noble Committee Chair (@gtconway3d) May 5, 2020 It’s really dark and empty in here. Perfect for social distancing. Lots of bats tho. Please bring lights and furniture. https://t.co/xgIKQDLt5i — George Conway, Noble Committee Chair (@gtconway3d) May 5, 2020 They’ve got Trump nailed. Now what is even funnier still, is that Trump had his own plans for “Morning in America” the sequel to “American Carnage” according to Greg Sargent, Washington Post: One irony here is Trump hoped to run his own “Morning in America” campaign. He has constantly claimed he took over a smoldering economic hellscape and magically transformed it into a spectacular economic juggernaut. Trump’s great at making things up, not so great at dealing with what’s actually there. The battle lines are drawn and all bets are that the Lincoln Project boys whup Trump.
Trump is tweeting after midnight, irritated that those “never-Trumpers” at the Lincoln Project made another video attacking him. "Katie Rogers @katierogers Citing the “extraordinary crisis”...
Let’s acknowledge right up front that the people we’re welcoming to our bosom today are not our friends. George Conway III is a corporate lawyer and a proud member of the Federalist Society. Reed Galen is a veteran political consultant who helped inflict George W. Bush on the Oval Office. John Weaver is another political consultant who tried to give us John McCain and John Kasich as presidents. Steve Schmidt is the political consultant who thought the best choice for vice president in 2008 was Sarah Palin. Rick Wilson, another political consultant, gave us a truly brutal campaign ad that tried to tie war hero Max Cleland to Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. In normal times, we would be pillorying them for the damage they helped inflict on our country. These are not normal times. These five are board members of The Lincoln Project, the “hive mind” of what the mainstream media has giddily dubbed the “Never Trumpers,” a loose coterie of Republicans who have taken what they say is a principled stance against the modern GOP, because it “has abdicated” the responsibility of serving the people and respecting the Constitution, “and instead pledged their loyalty to one person.” I agree completely, but damn, y’all. Sarah Palin? George W. Bush? Sarah Palin? Let’s let them explain a bit: Patriotism and the survival of our nation in the face of the crimes, corruption and corrosive nature of Donald Trump are a higher calling than mere politics. As Americans, we must stem the damage he and his followers are doing to the rule of law, the Constitution and the American character. … Congressional Republicans have embraced and copied Mr. Trump’s cruelty and defended and even adopted his corruption. Mr. Trump and his enablers have abandoned conservatism and longstanding Republican principles and replaced it with Trumpism, an empty faith led by a bogus prophet. … [Between now and November], our efforts will be dedicated to defeating President Trump and Trumpism at the ballot box and to elect those patriots who will hold the line. Yes, indeed. I agree absolutely. And in normal times, I would continue with a “But” or a “However,” and qualify this new-found resistance to Republican criminality and excess with a reminder of how they were involved and complicit with the high crimes and misdemeanors of the Bush administration and other nests of GOP wrongdoing. I’m not going to do that for today. In fact, I’m not going to do it between now and November. Because these are not normal times. The five members of the Lincoln Project wrote an op-ed published on April 15 that reads in part: This November, Americans will cast their most consequential votes since Abraham Lincoln’s reelection in 1864. We confront a constellation of crises: a public health emergency not seen in a century, an economic collapse set to rival the Great Depression, and a world where American leadership is absent and dangers rise in the vacuum. Today, the United States is beset with a president who was unprepared for the burden of the presidency and who has made plain his deficits in leadership, management, intelligence and morality. So they’ve taken a step unprecedented in modern American history. They, prominent Republican movers and shakers all, have turned their backs on their party and endorsed Joe Biden […]
Attack Ad From the Lincoln Project Calls Bull$hit On Trump’s Lies About Impeachment Distracting Him from COVID-19
This newest ad from the Lincoln Project blows the lid off Trump and Mitch McConnell’s wailing about how Trump couldn’t get to the coronavirus pandemic because the Evil Democrats were keeping him busy 24/7 with the impeachment. Nothing like reviewing dates and times and figures. I love how these facts are presented. The base might not buy any of this, but I’m betting the Independents will. Here’s a bonus I just found. Trump is going to throw a Cat 5 hissy fit as these ads continue. I think he hates the Never Trumpers more than the Democrats. The President will stop at nothing to protect himself and himself only. By discounting those American seniors who have served and protected our nation countless times during moments of national crisis, @realDonaldTrump is deeming them unworthy. pic.twitter.com/u7Vn3pPkhQ — The Lincoln Project (@ProjectLincoln) April 8, 2020
Of all of the splinter groups that have united to support Donald Trump, the KKK and the Nazis, reprehensible as they are, do not compare to the evangelical wing nuts. These people left behind all logic and common sense years ago when they began demanding that creationism be taught in schools and that the earth was only 6,000 years old. They were already hopelessly out of touch, but when Trump came onto the scene, the situation magnified into indescribable absurdity. The Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump group spearheaded by Rick Wilson, George Conway, Steve Schmidt and John Weaver, compiled this hilarious mash up of Trump with his favorite sect of groupies, the evangelicals. I honestly don’t know whether to laugh or cry. It’s nothing short of tragic that the evangelism preached by Billy Graham back in the day, which was basically a harmless back-to-the-Bible kind of a morality, has morphed into the prosperity consciousness scam of the 21st Century, which is the most immoral scam ever pulled, let alone by religious people. Their patron saint is not Jesus, it is P.T. Barnum, for only by utilizing his holy edict, “There’s a sucker born every minute,” are these people able to survive and prosper. Fear and idiocy are the twin pole stars by which the evangelicals navigate the seas of life, not love and truth, which are supposed to be the bedrock of the Christian church. It is little wonder that fewer young people than ever before are identifying as “Christian” when this is the picture they see associated with that label. if these are the people who are going to be in heaven, I’ll take my chances in Hell — with the likes of Justin Trudeau, why not?
The foundation for taking control of our government back from the crookedest regime in the history of the republic has been laid by the historic impeachment vote Wednesday night, with 229 Democrats and one Independent voting yes, 195 Republicans plus two Democrats voting no, and one non voting Democrat and two non voting Republicans. Tulsi Gabbard voted present — real tower of strength and conviction, that one. But while the foundation may be laid for the removal of Donald Trump from office, it remains to be seen if any kind of a substantive structure can be built upon that foundation, with Mitch McConnell already telegraphing this week his intentions to follow the White House’s lead in Trump’s defense. The question then becomes, can and will McConnell simply bulldoze impeachment, and along with his Republican majority in the Senate, violate their oaths of office. the Constitution be damned? For the moment, the question may be moot, because Nancy Pelosi has indicated that she’s not going to send the approved Articles of Impeachment right over, until there are some assurances of a fair Senate trial and not a kangaroo court, on the impeachment issue. Washington Post: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke to the reporters after the vote and did not rule out not sending the articles to the Senate right away. “We’ll make a decision as a group as we always have as we go along,” she said, when asked. Some House Democrats had called on her to delay sending the articles since the Senate Republicans weren’t going to hold a full trial. Pelosi didn’t shut the door on the idea, saying that ”so far, we haven’t seen anything that looks fair to us.” Asked if she could guarantee the articles will be sent to the Senate “at some point,” Pelosi said that was the Democrats intention, “but we will see what happens over there.” Wednesday was an historic night. What proceeds from here on out will be equally historic. If the Republican majority intends to do no more than give lip service to a trial and their decision is pre-ordained, as seems to be the case, because both Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell have gone on record describing themselves as “biased” then there is no sense in even bothering, and the takeaway from that is that our system is broken beyond repair. Say goodbye to the America we grew up in. The only valid thing to do, constitutionally speaking, at this point, is to assure that the Senate will perform it’s duty and do a valid impeachment trial. And seriously, what are the odds of that? Welcome to the new ground zero in the effort to save democracy. And if you doubt the true state of affairs in this country, with two polarized parties and conservatism having been sold down the river for Trumpism, read the op/ed co-authored by Never Trumpers George Conway and Rick Wilson along with two other Republican strategists Steve Schmidt and John Weaver. This group has founded “the Lincoln Project” dedicated to putting the principles of democracy above party, and they have started a superPAC, which has already raised $1 Million, with the proviso that the money will go to elect the Democratic nominee. When Republican players start raising money for Democrats, you know that we are in the $hit […]
