Alright, this is stunning. We here are rightly damned critical of the evangelical community, pretty much all the time. Thus, it is only fair to note when at least some of them brave serious blowback by publishing something that actually comports with Christianity. It is not just “any” magazine, either. It is Christianity Today, founded by Billy Graham. They lay out some truth for their readers: “Let’s grant this to the president: The Democrats have had it out for him from day one, and therefore nearly everything they do is under a cloud of partisan suspicion,” wrote chief editor Mark Galli. “But the facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral.” Okay, I’ll admit they’re right that we have had it out for Trump since day one. Personally, I have had it out for Trump since a 1991 article in Vanity Fair lead me to conclude; “This guy is a world class asshole.” To be fair, he has changed since then. He has gotten much much worse. He no longer has the ability to even fake being human. So yes, we have had it out for him, and I guess you could call it a partisan cloud. But I would only note that the immorality that they cite, has been blatantly obvious since … well, 1991, but especially so since announcing his run. “The reason many are not shocked about this is that this president has dumbed down the idea of morality in his administration,” continued Galli. “He has hired and fired a number of people who are now convicted criminals. He himself has admitted to immoral actions in business and his relationship with women, about which he remains proud. His Twitter feed alone—with its habitual string of mischaracterizations, lies, and slanders—is a near perfect example of a human being who is morally lost and confused.” Not true, it is actually much worse. But we’ll take it. This is really where they find the right tone, right argument, deserving of righteous praise: “Consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior. Consider what an unbelieving world will say if you continue to brush off Mr. Trump’s immoral words and behavior in the cause of political expediency. If we don’t reverse course now, will anyone take anything we say about justice and righteousness with any seriousness for decades to come? Can we say with a straight face that abortion is a great evil that cannot be tolerated and, with the same straight face, say that the bent and broken character of our nation’s leader doesn’t really matter in the end?” No, you cannot, and I am glad you see that, because you are correct. If you had continued to make excuses, you wouldn’t be worth listening to ever. You still have a shitload to reflect upon, the insipient racism, the violent culture, and the indifference to suffering. BUT, you are actually reflecting, and because you are known to actually believe the begats over evolution, hopefully your answer will begat further humility and honesty. I have […]
Sometimes people in Washington get it plain wrong!
If conservatives support police killing citizens without justification, climate denial, fact denial, science denial, racist and misogynistic behavior, or a litany of other absurd points of view about numerous important issues, we call them out.
