As everyone knows, U.S. soil was attacked overnight in Iraq. As a matter of international law, a nation’s embassy is free-standing property of the country sponsoring the embassy. We were attacked, and reports indicate that the attack can be traced to a group “backed” by Iran. The extent of Iran’s “backing” is yet to be determined, but that has not deterred Trump from issuing his all-too-predictable tweet. First, he attempts to elevate himself above his hated enemy, President Obama, and then he gravely threatens the nation that he may or may not be our enemy, the one that attacked our embassy: The U.S. Embassy in Iraq is, & has been for hours, SAFE! Many of our great Warfighters, together with the most lethal military equipment in the world, was immediately rushed to the site. Thank you to the President & Prime Minister of Iraq for their rapid response upon request…. — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 31, 2019 Notice the embarrassing chest pump? He is so much more in control than Obama in Benghazi, “immediately rushed to the site” – which, in Iraq, likely means they were five minutes down the road, whereas in Benghazi they were in Italy, but we move on. *Whoever came up with “Warfighters” as the new moniker should be punished. Our troops deserve better. They do so much more than fight wars, and our military’s mission is more about defense than war. Trump seems to LOVE it, so it’s not changing. Trump made his threat: ….Iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred, at any of our facilities. They will pay a very BIG PRICE! This is not a Warning, it is a Threat. Happy New Year! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 31, 2019 Obviously, if the attack is traced directly back to Iran, Iran better suffer severe consequences of the type that deters it, and any other nation, from ever attempting such an action again. But here’s the problem, Trump hasn’t given us any indication yet that he’s capable of implementing anything more than big words, maybe some token sanctions. Iran is an ally of Russia. Indeed, one can find this simply on Wiki: From January 2017 onward, Turkey has collaborated closely with Iran and Russia in the Astana talks to resolve the Syrian Civil War. Turkey’s relations with Iran further improved during the 2017 Qatar diplomatic crisis, where both countries backed Qatar in a dispute with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Turkey condemned the 2017–18 Iranian protests, accusing the United States and Israel of interference in internal Iranian affairs. Need I say much more? We have heard reports previously that Trump had fighter jets in the air, on the way to bomb Iran, when he … decided against it. I am not saying that turning the jets around was a bad thing. I am just noting that Trump can “equivocate” on these things. And I am not sure this is something that should be equivocated upon. Our nation was attacked, and some sort of reprisal must be done, perhaps military. Indeed, that is what Trump promised when running for president, even stating he would kill the families of terrorists. He remains a sick man. Yet Trump has been strangely “peaceful” as president. Perhaps to a fault. […]
Sometimes people in Washington get it plain wrong!
If conservatives support police killing citizens without justification, climate denial, fact denial, science denial, racist and misogynistic behavior, or a litany of other absurd points of view about numerous important issues, we call them out.
