A Reminder Following Baghdadi’s Death: ‘The Terrorists We’re Killing Today Are the Terrorists We Created Yesterday’

Raid on al-Bahgdadi Took Place In Spite Of Trump, Not Because Of His Military “Genius”

Donald Trump just couldn’t congratulate himself enough on the ISIS raid in Syria, which he says resulted in the killing of Abu Bakr al-Bahgdadi — what a consummate relief to be able to spin the news cycle away from impeachment and Ukraine, and take a victory lap for something. The Sunday news shows were awash with Trumpites like Mike Pence praising Trump’s “decisiveness”  and giving him credit for the raid. The fact of the matter is, Trump’s decisiveness almost prevented the raid from taking place at all. It this mission was a success, it was despite Trump, not because of him. New York Times: … the C.I.A. worked closely with Iraqi and Kurdish intelligence officials in Iraq and Syria to identify Mr. al-Baghdadi’s more precise whereabouts and to put spies in place to monitor his periodic movements, allowing American commandos to stage an assault Saturday in which President Trump said Mr. al-Baghdadi died. But Mr. Trump’s abrupt decision to withdraw American forces from northern Syria disrupted the meticulous planning and forced Pentagon officials to press ahead with a risky, night raid before their ability to control troops and spies and reconnaissance aircraft disappeared, according to military, intelligence and counterterrorism officials. Mr. al-Baghdadi’s death, they said, occurred largely in spite of Mr. Trump’s actions. The officials praised the Kurds, who continued to provide information to the C.I.A. on Mr. al-Baghdadi even after Mr. Trump’s decision to withdraw the American troops left the Syrian Kurds to confront a Turkish offensive alone. The Syrian and Iraqi Kurds, one official said, provided more intelligence for the raid than any single country. In other words, the allies that Trump just abandoned are the ones who delivered this victorious mission, not Donald Trump. But he’s basking in the glory of it, and taking all the credit — despite the fact that he went bonkers when Obama was lauded for the death of Osama bin Laden.   *Tweets* pic.twitter.com/mEc8pd7sJL — I Choose Love (@imanoleagain) October 27, 2019 “All he did was say, ‘ok.'” And all Trump did was double down on the green, while it was going on. The only way Trump will be responsible for the defeat of ISIS is if ISIS manages to shrink itself down to fit inside of a golf ball and somehow it ends up in Trump’s caddy’s bag, then he can whack ’em to death with his golf club. This is just one more example of career professionals and seasoned veterans of all stripes keeping America’s show on the road, while the reality TV actor plays golf and then comes out and does a photo op to commemorate his “win” or “deal” of the moment. Look for more of the same. This pattern is Trump’s hallmark, engraved in stone and it won’t change, except to get worse.
