President Donald Trump blamed mental illness for the massacre that killed 17 students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

“So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior,” Trump said. “Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again.”

Trump had nothing to say about guns and the fact that a mentally ill person is far less lethal without a gun, particularly an assault rifle. Trump preferred to backhandedly blame the Parkland community itself for the tragedy, while also coloring all who experience mental-health issues as uniquely dangerous. (One out of five people experience mental health issues in their lifetime).

Democrat Joe Kennedy was having none of this. Kennedy noted that the healthcare plan that passed the House would have torn mental health funding from communities, including $800 billion in funding for Medicaid, the largest supplier of mental health services.

But, he didn’t stop there:

“Two, they rolled back protections for our community for folks that were suffering from mental health issues to get a gun,” he continued. “Three, folks who suffer from mental illness are far more likely to be the victims of crime by perpetrators. So, it is misleading. It is not factually accurate. It does a huge disservice to so many families out there. Twenty percent of Americans out there at some point struggle with mental illness.”

The Democrats are right to play “politics” with the issue, now, while the pain is still present. People are tired of being told they are helpless, by the exact same people who want citizens to feel helpless. The Republicans know that if they can buy themselves a week or two, the news will move on. Just like after Las Vegas, when people were going to ban bump stops, and yet here we are, still with nothing done, nothing.

More Democrats should be doing exactly as Joe Kennedy is doing. Make politics out of this now because no one else will later. Make politics out of this now because the victims in Florida are screaming their demands that we do so If nothing is done now, nothing will be done.
