The big news of the week was that Robert Mueller convened a grand jury for his investigation into Trump campaign collusion with Russian meddling in the election. This was reported widely in all mainstream media sources.

But on the topic of big news, Preet Bharara, former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, sees it differently. The news of the grand jury was expected, as he explains in this tweet:

The grand jury was inevitable because it is the normal course in a case like this. However, there was a bit of news this week that he found more significant. Specifically, the report that Mueller is seeking documents on Flynn in the New York Times. This is a much more significant development in the case:

And why is this more significant?

And Bharara replies:

So this means that Mueller’s investigation is in full swing. It is has gone past the setting up phase and is now pursuing direct evidence of a crime. The investigation will take time, but perhaps this signals that the investigation will start moving at a quicker pace. In any case, Bharara believes that this is a significant development, and he should know.
