You two really messed up! First you let yourselves be seen by the living, and then you let Beetlejuice out and you didn’t put him back! Juno Beetlejuice
The reporters covering the flailing last days of the Trump administration have to stop saying that Trump refused to admit that he’s lost. He already has admitted it, at least to himself, and it’s driving every goddamn thing he’s done since he went down to Mar-A-Lago.
Trump knows he’s lost, it’s over. He lost, there is no last minute miracle or legislative chicanery either he or the GOP can pull that will salvage his presidency, and he knows that in 22 days he will walk out of the White House with legal cross hairs painted on his back. The thing that I don’t understand is why the GOP is so fucking amazed at how he’s spending his last days in power.
Trump has been nothing if not transparent all along. Anybody who gave even a passing glance at Trump’s history before entering politics should already have known one thing. Trump himself is personally incapable of failure. If Trump fails at something, he does so only because somebody else screwed with him! And Trump has made it loudly crystal clear, if somebody fucks with him, he will fuck them back ten times harder, and he will wait years, or even decades to do so.
Just look back at the 2016 GOP primaries. When Trump became the clear front runner, he ran a hostile takeover of the RNC and the party. He refused to sign a pledge to back the eventual winner, then claimed that the RNC was plotting against him, and threatening to pull out to wage a third party campaign if he felt ill used, and take his followers with him. The RNC caved, and let him run roughshod.
Trump won’t admit defeat because Trump never loses! He didn’t lose the election, he got fucked! And in this case, the people who screwed with him were the RNC, weak kneed incumbents in his own party that didn’t do enough for him, the state GOP’s, who didn’t bother to try hard enough to rig their states for a successful outcome, and last but not least, the ungrateful voters.
First he dealt with the state GOP organizations. He hammered them publicly, both in words and by Twitter, making them jump through hoops like a bunch of monkeys trying to find ways to overturn results they knew they couldn’t. Then he made them spend a day with the IQ points dripping out of their ears, listening to The Ghoul Man and Sidney Powell. He even turned State against state party by having the Texas Attorney General sue four other GOP states over their handling of the election.
Then it was the lousy ingrate voters turn in the barrel. Trump could have signed the Covid relief bill anytime, starting on December 23rd. His staff even had a room set up at Mar-A-Lago for the signing ceremony. Trump said Screw that, and hit the links. Trump only signed the bill after the benefits had already expired, costing 14 million Americans a week of $300 unemployment benefits. And the crudity of the way he did it was an inelegant double barrel birds. If Trump actually gave a shit about the $2000 checks and that other shit, he would have held out until the changes were made, or the bill died at the end of the congressional term. The fact that Trump got nothing for his holdout, and signed quietly made it clear that it was nothing more than a cheap act of petty revenge on the helpless. In other words, a typical Trump dick move.
And now it’s Mitch McConnel and the Senate GOP’s turn to take their medicine. Trump’s demand for $2000 checks had exactly the effect he intended. Speaker Pelosi immediately turned around and passed a stand alone bill to add another $1400 to the stimulus checks. This is crippling for Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue in their Senate runoff races, both are now forced to come out in favor of the increase, while Ossoff and Warnock play stock footage of the two of them advocating against any additional stimulus checks. And now Trump is threatening to go down to Georgia on the eve of the elections, to rally for Loeffler and Perdue, where he will certainly spend two hours ranting about how rigged the Georgia elections are, two days before congress meets to certify the election.
This is all classic Trump, mainly because it’s all about Trump, and no one else. The way Trump sees it, if he got screwed in Georgia, why should he be the only one who loses in Georgia? The hell with Loeffler and Perdue, and why would Trump give a shit about whether or not McConnell maintains control of the Senate? That’s just the last twist of the dagger for McConnell. Trump has never given a shit about the GOP since day one, except where it could benefit him.
But here’s something else to consider. As sweet as the revenge is for Trump, he is, after all, purely transactional. Trump does nothing if it doesn’t directly benefit him, and while revenge may taste sweet, it isn’t an actual benefit. There is a purely transactional reason that Trump is doing this, and you haven’t heard this anywhere else.
As the remaining days of his Presidency wane, more and more commentators are starting to express the opinion that once Trump is gone, his hold over the GOP will be brief. Without his presidential pulpit, his media influence will wane. Even FOX News will have to move on to opposing Biden. Mitch McConnell recognized Biden as the President elect from the floor, a mortal sin. Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) excoriated Trump on television over his gamesmanship on the Covid relief package. The GOP Senate will vote tomorrow to override his veto on the Defense Spending Act, the first of his tenure. These are all signs that at least some in the GOP are getting ready to move on to a post Trump world.
And this is intolerable. And so, Trump is burning down the structural GOP. He will keep to his promises of primary challengers to the impure. From threatening Pence with retaliation if he certifies the electoral college results, to brazen threats of violence in the streets on January 6th, when congress meets to certify the results, Trump is igniting a shitstorm that will last all the way up to threats of violence in the streets on Inauguration day. Trump is laying down a marker. He is not going silently into that good night, and he will make a show of force with his racist base.
From day one, the GOP never understood Donald Trump. First they thought that Trump was an ass clown that couldn’t win. And then they thought that they could control him with Pence the way they controlled Bush Lite with Cheney. Then they trusted the adults in the room. And when all else failed, they trusted he’d just disappear from the scene when he lost. After all, who would follow the shit show once he didn’t matter politically anymore? But from day one, Trump cultivated his work bench of misfit toys base to be loyal to the death. And now it’s finally time for the GOP to pay the check. Don’t forget the tip, guys!
