There’s a bigger problem however. One of our cherished institutions has been a free press. More to the point a free press that could criticize anyone including a President. Harshly criticize in fact, including pointing out wrongdoing up to and including crimes. So here’s my question: Just what makes these corporate media types think (in the face of all Trump’s attacks to date) that he won’t now directly use his “spirit of Roy Cohn” AG William Barr to start rounding up not just journalists but their bosses/owners? Hell, he had no problem with allowing a dictator that has bailed out a family member to hack to pieces (literally) an American based Washington Post journalist to death while he was alive! If that particular shot across the bow didn’t provide the much needed wake-up call I don’t know what would. That’s why I say these corporate media masters have their heads shoved up their asses. Okay, so I could have used a gentler term like burying their heads in the sand but this is too serious and I fear too imminent a threat to be gentle and cautious with my warning.
These corporate media types are used to Trump talking trash about them. Hell, it helps their bottom lines! So far. And since ratings/sales are up they are raking in money hand over fist and it’s blinding them to a threat that’s increasingly real. It’s now (I believe) increasingly possible if not likely that Trump will decide it’s time to instead of wound, to instead destroy yet another American institution which is our free press. It’s not like the Constitution matters to Trump, Barr or the GOP in general anymore. I have no doubt that Trump’s rantings against “the totally unfair media” have in private included demands to start locking up reporters, editors and owners. So far nothing has happened, but this week it’s become clear that AG Barr will find an excuse to do whatever Trump demands that he do. If that means jailing reporters and those that edit their work and sign their paychecks for say refusing to reveal sources the goobers at his rallies will dutifully chant “LOCK THEM UP” and GOP elected officials will either agree or be too terrified to try and stop it.
The corporate media types don’t think Trump would dare dismantle the institution we call the free press.
They are wrong.
I believe he will try. What’s one more norm/institution destroyed if it keeps him in power – and as for the GOP them too? That’s why they gave him such an overwhelming pass on Mueller’s findings, and then impeachment. Corporate media thinks they will continue to be able to do what they do since they almost always water down their criticism with some sort of both sides/false equivalency crap. Trump will only be mollified by that for so long. And now, Susan Collin’s prediction that Trump would learn a lesson is proving correct – he’s learned that no one running an agency in this government including the Department of Justice will stand up to him and say NO! In fact, most of them but particularly Billy Barr are eager to do Trump’s bidding. He got the AG he wanted. He got his very own Roy Cohn only Trump’s version has resources and powers the actual Roy Cohn couldn’t have imagined in his wildest & twisted fantasies!
If these corporate media types don’t pull their heads out of their asses and right soon we could find ourselves with the de facto “State News” (Fox) we currently have becoming THE ONLY NEWS just like in the dictatorships Trump so admires and thinks the United States should be. Between Fox, as well as talk radio and outlets like Sinclair most of the infrastructure is already in place and all that’s needed is a designation of who’s in charge of disseminating the official Trump line and ONLY what’s directly approved by him. Hell, he’s already got a bunch of former (?) Fox people working at the WH so they’ve already got office space there.
The itch to make it official and designate Fox as the official “United States News” is sure to be driving Trump nuts. Does anyone who has read this think otherwise? Or that this now completely unfettered Trump might go for it and try to actually make it happen?
I for one wouldn’t bet against it.
Our corporate media masters shouldn’t either. They may well have less time than they think to save the institution of a free press and themselves too.
