Late in the day on Monday, New York State Attorney General Letitia James issued a new subpoena in her investigation of the National Rifle Association. This is the latest turn in a months-long investigation of the nonprofit Second Amendment organization. The New York Times reports that sources who have “knowledge of the document” say that it covers areas of investigation ranging from the NRA’s tax compliance, the use of their charities to move money about, campaign financing, and monies paid out to NRA board members.
According to the Times, the charity funding and potential non-reporting of funding, is one of the main focuses of the new subpoena. The state attorney general is also looking into whether or not the NRA circumvented campaign finance laws by paying millions to political consulting firms Starboard Strategic and OnMessage, “as a way to direct money to Republican candidates advised by OnMessage, circumventing laws restricting how much groups like the N.R.A. can donate to political campaigns.”
The internal power battle between the NRA’s CEO Wayne LaPierre and others represented by the public relations firm Ackerman McQueen, has provided an insight into the luxurious spending, easy-money, and lifestyle of the LaPierre clan. The trickle that became a deluge of accusations between the two businesses has brought about investigative reports into the NRA, and led some experts to openly question the NRA’s tax-exempt, nonprofit status.
The past year has been a monumental one for the gun carrying warmongering organization. They’ve been directly linked to Russian espionage, and have come off a year of amazing financial loss. They have weathered all of this while continuing to promote their special brand of incoherent bloody-handed apologist politics. But while there are still tons of conservative politicians knee deep in NRA blood money, the political results for the Second Amendment cheerleaders have been less impressive. While this all goes on, Wayne LaPierre has been able to continue living in the same luxurious manner as he’s become accustomed to.
Thoughts and prayers.
