I am loathe to write another column after my Friday pick-six, which is supposed to signify the end of the work-week (You should review it, though), but it is not often that the Washington Post breaks a late Friday story, that might break the presidency. It is being reported that Trump met with Russian officials in 2017 and told them he was “not concerned” about their election interference.
The Ukraine scandal – as many of us predicted – is morphing into a bigger scandal, including Trump’s peculiar Russian relationship. From the Washington Post:
“President Trump told two senior Russian officials in a 2017 Oval Office meeting that he was unconcerned about Moscow’s interference in the U.S. election because the United States did the same in other countries, an assertion that prompted alarmed White House officials to limit access to the remarks to an unusually small number of people, according to three former officials with knowledge of the matter,” The Washington Post reported Friday evening.
At this rate, Trump is not going to make it through the weekend.
Note that the story comes confirmed by “three former officials with knowledge of the matter.” I noted earlier today that the leaks would come faster, and with more damaging information. People will be less afraid of “exposure” when they are in good company.
The Russian revelation follows a pattern, one we’ve known for quite some time, but until now had no specific facts upon which to hang the accusations:
“The comments, which have not been previously reported, were part of a now-infamous meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak, in which Trump revealed highly classified information that exposed a source of intelligence on the Islamic State. He also said during the meeting that firing FBI Director James B. Comey the day before had relieved ‘great pressure’ on him,” the newspaper noted.
And the comments themselves, Trump concerned only with Trump’s fate, are not the only similarity. It appears that somewhere deep within the White House walls, there exists a computer (or vault) holding all the “shit” that Trump and staff know could potentially take Trump down.
“A memorandum summarizing the meeting was limited to all but a few officials with the highest security clearances in an attempt to keep the president’s comments from being disclosed publicly, according to the former officials, who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive matters,”
Near every member of his intelligence community has testified to Russia’s attempts to hack our last, and next election, and yet Trump has repeatedly cast it off as “nothing,” certainly not something upon which he will expend energy. Now, it appears he’s inviting it.
Of course he is. He knows that the Russians are on his side, and that’s all that matters. Trump knows only “his” side, there is no “American” side.
Let’s see the Republicans attempt to defend this. A U.S. president telling Russia he doesn’t care that they meddle in our elections? A president that refuses to protect the nation from attack, so long as the attack benefits that president personally?
No, Republicans will not defend this, if it can be proven. Three separate sources? It is all but proven. And, we know there are documents, somewhere, noting that it happened.
Truly, at this rate, we might be looking at Trump being gone by the end of next week. Congress is supposed to go on recess. But, now with this new revelation, I don’t see how Pelosi lets them go home. Things are moving too fast now, and Congress needs to be in place to remove this president as soon as possible, if such damning information continues to emerge. We have said it forever, but it now appears to be proven, the man is a clear and present danger every single day he sits in the oval office.
I would like to remind everyone, because we want and appreciate your loyalty, we always noted that a cult leader like Trump could be invulnerable to everything, right up until he isn’t, and at that point the end could come blindingly fast. It could well be happening.
This Russian revelation, should it prove to be well-founded, is every bit as serious as the Ukrainian scandal. It demonstrates that Trump knew the Russians interfered, despite his continuous denials, and welcomed it. He has betrayed his oath of office, to his own benefit, again.
