Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday signed on to a constitutionally dubious GOP resolution that would alter Senate rules to dismiss the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump before the House even sends them to the upper chamber.

The measure, sponsored by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and backed by 12 other Republicans, would change more than two dozen Senate rules in order to dismiss the articles of impeachment if they are not sent to the Senate “within 25 calendar days from the date of adoption of such articles.”

The House approved the two articles of impeachment against Trump on Dec. 12, 2019, meaning the Hawley measure would require the House to send the articles to the Senate by Jan. 12, Axios pointed out.

After Hawley announced in a statement that the Majority Leader backed the resolution, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) accused McConnell of “trying to change the rules of the Senate to cover up for President Trump.”

“No one should be surprised,” Schumer tweeted.

Axios reported that the constitutionality of the Hawley resolution “is not clear.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said during a press conference Thursday that she will not send the impeachment articles to the Republican-controlled Senate until it is guaranteed they will receive a fair hearing, repeating the position she has held since the articles passed the House last month.

On Twitter, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) slammed McConnell for co-sponsoring the Hawley resolution, which was introduced earlier this week.

“The Senate Majority Leader will do anything—including shirk his constitutional duty—to protect the president from accountability,” Omar said. “Party over country is his M.O.”

Politico reported Thursday that McConnell, who has refused to commit to allowing witnesses for the trial, believes Pelosi could send the impeachment articles to the Senate as soon as Friday.

“While senators and aides cautioned that McConnell does not have inside intelligence, the remarks serve as key scheduling advice for senators,” Politico noted. “Most Republicans are now gearing up for the relentless pace of the impeachment trial to start on Monday or Tuesday.”

McConnell knows when this is all over, the republican party will be greatly diminished.

I would agree ,but there seems to be more (stupid people ), in the United State’s, than I ever would have guessed ! But when we remember our history of the old south , ( from reading ) they held slavery as a sacred rite , while only about 5 percent, actually owned slaves ! Most in fact we’re share croppers. By far , the majority of folks that died for the Confederacy , were share croppers. They were also (enslaved ) by plantation owners because they owned all the land ! This is now Trump’s base ! They believe… Read more »

McConnell and his brethren are really stupid, one cannot dismiss articles of impeachment, Trump is impeached forever that is reality. Go ahead and do this and see what happens in November, you will be out on your keisters.

Moscow Mitch should be forced to resign for perjury right after swearing to be impartial as he has publicly stated he has no intention of being impartial. Same with Leningrad Lindsey. Both of these Trumpublican Syncophants have disgraced their office and have betrayed their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution from all threats both foriegn and domestic.

That’s what they do, cheat. They can’t win anything in a fair way. So why not try to stack the deck. He can’t dismiss the articles but he can try to dismiss the trial, I don’t see that happening but who knows

It’s not constitutional to make “ x— post facto “
laws , that would change the constitution.
And this is what would happen.
This would be a true crises.
The house would probably freeze all funding for
anything . Because all spending comes from the house . The government would shut down
and no one would be paid . Projects would stop!
It would be a true disaster for Americans, all because of Trump , and McConnell.
The house might open proceedings on impeachment on McConnell .
We live in interesting (dangerous times )!

McConnel is a enabler to Trump and a criminal as well. He will go down and his wife too if he’s not careful. He needs to be impeached like Trump

Wel I don’t know for sure but you might want to hold off on that. Word is some “real” patriotic people about to blow up some investigations. Just read up on it and it looks like the House may not be done just yet.
