McConnell and Trump, Their Word is Their Con

The day Supreme Court Justice  Ruth Bader Ginsburg died, before her body was even cold, Mitch McConnell announced he’d cram  a new Justice into her seat before the election, an election that has already begun as voters go to the polls in many states. His reprehensible lack of sympathy for the loss of one of America’s greatest jurists was palpable. He showed the empathy of a barracuda. He could have allowed the nation to grieve before pressing  for her replacement.

This self-absorbed, heartless conduct is reminiscent  of an ugly and unforgettable  scene in an old movie, Zorba the Greek. A wealthy widow in a small Greek village lay dying in her bedroom, surrounded by peasant women, seated on the floor, waiting for her to take her last breath. The moment she died, the women quickly scuffled over her belongings, none of them caring about her passing.

McConnell is  not just cold-hearted, he utterly lacks principle. Senate policy only applies if it suits him. That is, it only applies to Democrats. In McConnell’s world there are, in effect, no rules that apply to him or any of the other Senate sycophants  who obediently follow behind Trump.

In March, 2016, Mitch McConnell refused, during a presidential election year, to allow the Senate to consider President Obama’s candidate for the US Supreme Court, Merrick Garland. Obama had nominated a centrist to the Court, seeking an even-handed jurist acceptable to both parties.  In fact, some Senate Democrats were uncomfortable with a candidate who was not left-leaning.

McConnell  stated that “the American people should have a voice in deciding who should sit on the court, and the appointment should wait until after the election. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president.”  This was unprecedented. McConnell unilaterally created a new Senate policy to govern when a sitting President may propose a candidate for the Supreme Court.

President Trump and other 2016 Presidential candidates, including Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio,  vehemently agreed. Lindsey Graham added his hearty concurrence.

Trump should be bound by his consent. So should his shameless followers.

As  Lindsey Graham  stated in 2016, “I want you to use my words against me. If there is a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said ‘let’s let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination,’ and you could use my words against me and you’d be absolutely right.”

I believe that the vast majority of Americans lead their lives with greater integrity than people like Trump, McConnell and others.  For us average Americans, we have principles we adhere to all our lives. Politicians like these change out matters of “principle” for what will get them reelected. In other words, they have no principles.

Most of us wouldn’t befriend such an untrustworthy person. For us, our word is our bond. We are about to find out for how many of these “leaders” will stand up and say, their word is their bond–or that their word is their con.

We already know that the words  of  Trump and McConnell  are their con and worthless.  Both are committed to appointing a new Justice before the election. Lindsey Graham also reneged on his solemn statement in 2016 to buckle to Trump’s will. “I will support President @realDonaldTrump in any effort to move forward regarding the recent vacancy created by the passing of Justice Ginsburg,” Graham tweeted. This tweet came the day Justice Ginsburg  died. It didn’t take long for the unscrupulous Graham to recant his vow in 2016.

The President and these Senate leaders have now decided that the American people should not have a voice in deciding who should sit on the Supreme Court. In fact, they only care about your votes to keep them on the Federal gravy train.

South Carolina citizens, use this weasel’s words against him, just as he encouraged you to do. Vote him out.

Kentucky citizens, ask what McConnell has done for you over all these years and compare that to his fat cat millionaire status as your public servant. He’s too old and made too much money off the taxpayers to continue. Enough is enough. Vote him out.

In the midst of a Presidential election, already underway, this administration will hurriedly push for a Trump candidate  How many other Senators in the Trump Party (it is no longer the Republican Party), along with Trump, McConnell and Graham, have been sitting on the floor of the dying Justice Ginsburg’s  bedroom waiting for her to die to scuffle for her seat on the Supreme Court?

Trump is fond of giving disparaging nicknames to his adversaries, Crooked Hillary, Lying Ted, Little Marco, etc.

How about Malicious Mitch,  Lindsey the Weasel,  Little Marco the Groveler and let’s keep Lying Ted.

Wisdom and principle are not relevant to these waffling politicians. It’s all about power and greed. These men have made more money as “public servants” than the vast majority of Americans.

Where do you suppose Malicious Mitch and Lindsey the Weasel got their multi-million dollar fortunes?
