Donald Trump and the City of Baltimore have a checkered past together. Trump called Baltimore a “disgusting and rat-infested mess” where “no human would want to live.” And he had no love lost for the late Elijah Cummings, who was a beloved citizen of Baltimore. So on that premise, Trump’s planned visit to Baltimore for Memorial Day was a bit surprising. But now, it’s off altogether at the request of the Mayor. And if you read between the lines, it’s not difficult to see that the Mayor doesn’t want to get stiffed for security costs, like so many other towns that Trump has visited have, because he’s already got enough financial headaches.
Dear Mr. President @realDonaldTrump, please stay home! The City of Baltimore is currently under a Stay at Home order for the safety of our residents, who have been hit hard by #COVID19. pic.twitter.com/7FwrHIHyeX

Trump is notorious for stiffing municipal governments by not paying for local law enforcement costs for his visits. Baltimore obviously doesn’t want to get in line and wait for payment that likely will never come. Plus, the wording of the rest of the letter makes a commentary on Trump’s cavalier attitude towards COVID-19, not wearing a mask, etc. Good for the Mayor. He’s putting forth the right message and the bottom line seems to be, the people of Baltimore have had enough of Trump’s trollling, they don’t want to be stiffed as well. Hear hear. Let’s send the same message at the ballot box in November.
