HHS spokesman Michael Caputo is certifiably batshit. He posted a paranoid screed video on his Facebook page Sunday night warning, among other things, that the CDC was harboring a “resistance unit” determined to undermine Donald Trump. The only explanation for this is that his being recently outed for leading efforts to warp CDC weekly bulletins to comport with Trump’s narrative on coronavirus, pushed him over the edge, because this is pure lunacy. New York Times:

“You understand that they’re going to have to kill me, and unfortunately, I think that’s where this is going,” Mr. Caputo, a Trump loyalist installed by the White House in April, told followers in a video he hosted live on his personal Facebook page. Mr. Caputo has 5,000 Facebook friends, and the video has been viewed more than 850 times. It has been shared by 44 followers. […]

“I don’t like being alone in Washington,” he said, describing “shadows on the ceiling in my apartment, there alone, shadows are so long.” He then ran through a series of conspiracy theories, culminating in a prediction that Mr. Trump will win re-election but his Democratic opponent, Joseph R. Biden Jr., will refuse to concede.

“And when Donald Trump refuses to stand down at the inauguration, the shooting will begin,” he said. “The drills that you’ve seen are nothing.” He added: “If you carry guns, buy ammunition, ladies and gentlemen, because it’s going to be hard to get.”

So Trump’s going to win, but Biden won’t concede — and that is plausible in one scenario. If, on election night, there’s a “red mirage” effect and ballots haven’t been counted, Biden will wait until the ballots are counted before he does anything. Hopefully, Biden will win Florida and enough other states to where his victory will be decisive and this scenario won’t arise. But the last part of the comment, “When Trump refuses to stand down at the inauguration?” Oh, boy. So now Trump will stay in office whether he’s voted out or not? Not that this comes as a surprise. The plot against Trump is the main wingnut narrative these days and Caputo is clearly one of the foot soldiers in front, leading the charge.

His Facebook presentation comes as Mr. Trump has increasingly singled out federal government scientists as targets, complaining without evidence that they were deliberately trying to subvert his administration’s efforts to fight the pandemic for their own political reasons.

Mr. Caputo echoed those sentiments, saying scientists “deep in the bowels of the C.D.C. have given up science and become political animals.” […]

They “haven’t gotten out of their sweatpants except for meetings at coffee shops” to plot “how they’re going to attack Donald Trump next,” Mr. Caputo said. “There are scientists who work for this government who do not want America to get well, not until after Joe Biden is president.”

This last statement summarizes it all. Trump can’t stand that he’s losing, and none of the other opportunists who have lucked into prestigious government jobs in this faux-administration, making more money and wielding more power than they ever dreamt possible can stand that he’s losing, either. Caputo is just one more no-talent who’s going back to the ashes when all this is over.

Caputo has no background in health care. He worked on Trump’s 2016 campaign and wanted a job in the early administration, but was passed over. However, he remained friendly with Dan Scavino, and Scavino got him the job as HHS spokesperson, “describing him as both media savvy and intensely loyal to the president,” according to the Times. That’s what this administration is about, in a nutshell, is PR and loyality. If you can give good PR and fake like you know something, while furthering Trump’s batshit agenda, then you’ve got a job. This is the description of “the best people” Trump said he would hire, know-nothing fakes, hired in capacities for which they are grievously unqualified.

What Caputo did by interfering with the CDC is no small thing. It is major. The CDC reports, their core public health updates, called Morbidity and Mortality Weekly reports are deemed “the holiest of the holy” and have never been messed with like this before. They are considered important reports and respected internationally. Caputo has done a lot of damage to CDC already and these histrionics won’t help.

The C.D.C. has traditionally been apolitical, serving Republican and Democratic administrations from its headquarters in Atlanta. In recent months, health officials at the C.D.C. and other agencies have increasingly cited political interference from Washington. […]

Former and current agency officials have asserted that Dr. Redfield has allowed so much political interference with the agency’s work that some career scientists are on the verge of resigning.

Caputo needs to be replaced. He is currently raving that he won’t step down.

Despite the criticism of his team’s interference with C.D.C., Mr. Caputo said he expected to remain in his post because Mr. Trump supported him. “I’m not going anywhere,” he said. “I swear to God, as God is my witness, I am not stopping.”

If Caputo needs a lesson in Trump loyalty, Michael Cohen, Rick Gates, Paul Manafort and others can instruct him. Here’s part of his meltdown from what the Times describes as a “brief interview this weekend.”

“To allow people to die so that you can replace the president is a grievous venial sin, venial sin,” he said. “And these people are all going to hell.”

Well, I can tell you that Caputo’s grasp of Catholicism is no better than his grasp of government or science, not surprisingly.  He’s got venial mixed up with mortal. Venial is defined as “denoting a sin that is not regarded as depriving the soul of divine grace.” Venial sin won’t send you to Hell, but mortal sin will. Caputo doesn’t know this, because he’s just another big brain, as that term is understood in Trump world. He’s Brad Parscale’s twin and I would hazard a guess, reveres Parscale for all the money he’s been able to grift in just a few short years from the Trump phenomenon.

I wonder what class of a sin naked ambition, coupled with greed, and in the face of zero ability (lack of humility and a just assessment of oneself) is? Actually, those are just the defects of character underpinning the real sin, which is attempting to dismantle the Center for Disease Control during the pandemic of the century, for personal gain, in total disregard of the cost in human life. That’s where Caputo’s philosophical musings need to be directed, not at deep state phantasms. The soul he saves may be his own.
