Facing backlash over ‘must-run’ segment endorsing tear-gassing children, Sinclair apologizes—sorta

Sinclair Broadcast Group has made headlines before for their “must-run” segments that they force into all 193 stations they own or operate in 81 markets, but rarely do they apologize for it. Until now. Late Wednesday afternoon, the conservative TV empire sent out a series of apologetic(ish) tweets disavowing the “Bottom Line with Boris” installment that Sinclair ordered their local stations to shoehorn into their broadcasts this week. The segment, starring Boris Epshtyn, a Trump-flunkie turned low-rent pundit, essentially endorsed the use of tear gas at the southern border.

You can watch it here.

Here’s the vile transcript, so you can spare yourself Epshtyn’s ranting face.

The migrant crisis on our southern border has greatly escalated. This past weekend, the United States was forced to temporarily close a major point of entry in San Diego, California, in response to hundreds of migrants attempting to storm the U.S.-Mexico border in hopes of claiming asylum. Dozens of migrants attacked U.S. border enforcement by throwing rocks and bottles. Ultimately, American authorities had to use tear gas to stop the attacks.

Some on the left, such as Democrat Congresswoman Maxine Waters, were immediately up in arms about our president and his team standing up for our men and women in uniform and for our national security. The fact of the matter is that this is an attempted invasion of our country. Period. Our border must remain intact and secure. It is not a partisan position to believe that our immigration system is broken and needs to be fixed. However, it unfortunately appears that there are many on the left who believe it is wrong to defend our country and abide by the rule of law. I would bet that many of those same people live behind walls and locked doors but do not want to afford the same benefit to our country as a whole.

Here’s the bottom line: The notion that a caravan of migrants can be allowed to break through our borders is ludicrous and dangerous. The United States of America should not and cannot be intimidated by those willing to use force to get into our country illegally.

Just what we all need served alongside the local news.

Eventually, Sinclair took to Twitter to offer a lukewarm “nonpology” for the must-run in a series of three lame tweets. First, they nonpologized for *just* this segment.

Then, they offered some deflection, a push for their hard-hitting reporting, and a typo, before inviting folks to reach out directly to them about the “fair, unbiased journalism” they don’t actually provide.

This from the “broadcast group” that also aired Epshtyn’s support of Trump’s enforcement of family separation policies earlier this year, and his endorsement of Donald Trump’s “both sides” assessment of the violence in Charlottesville in 2017—and never offered so much as a nonpology.

And how can anyone forget the script heard ‘round the world (or at least the nation) this spring?

But hey, local news always comes first, right?
