Providing protection for Donald Trump’s frequent trips, his New York home, and an unprecedented number of people in his extended family, has been a huge drain on the Secret Service. Agents have hit overtime limits, and annual budgets have been burned through in only seven months, leaving no funds to pay agents following Trump on his extended vacation. As reported by USA Today

Secret Service Director Randolph “Tex” Alles, in an interview with USA TODAY, said more than 1,000 agents have already hit the federally mandated caps for salary and overtime allowances that were meant to last the entire year. …

Under Trump, 42 people have protection, a number that includes 18 members of his family.

The agency is covering not just every golf outing for Trump, but the travels of Donald Trump Jr, Eric Trump, Ivanka, Tiffany, and … obviously quite a few more. Following the Trump family around is soaking up the Secret Service budget at a breakneck pace. But the biggest cost is the one that’s used the most often.

The president’s jaunts to Mar-a-Lago are estimated to cost at least $3 million each, based on a General Accounting Office estimate for similar travel by former President Obama. The Secret Service has spent some $60,000 on golf cart rentals alone this year to protect Trump at both Mar-a-Lago and Bedminster.

Now, Congress has to act to expand the agency, up the budget, and authorize additional pay for agents who are now working overtime for free.

In addition to Poppa Trump’s weekly golf vacations, the family has made no effort to restrict their travels.

A few examples: Earlier this year, Eric Trump’s business travel to Uruguay cost the Secret Service nearly $100,000 just for hotel rooms. Other trips included the United Kingdom and the Dominican Republic. In February, both sons and their security details traveled to Vancouver for the opening of new Trump hotel there, and to Dubai to officially open a Trump International Golf Club.

US Taxpayers are paying for agents to follow Eric and Junior to Dubai to open golf clubs. Even Tiffany has dragged along Secret Service officers on a European vacation. And of course, with Trump, you get a couple of discarded wives who likely also get their own team of protection.

If you’re wondering who the other people on the astounding list of 42 members of the Trump regime traveling with agents in tow might be, it includes people like Kellyanne Conway and other Trump advisers. It also includes Mike Pence’s three 20-something kids. However, that number apparently does not include the special security teams ordered up by antsy Trump officials.

As reported by E&E News in February and by The New York Times on April 10, the EPA has requested 10 additional full-time security guards to form a round-the-clock detail that will protect the administrator.

Pruitt offered up radical cuts in the EPA budget, but demanded a security team to follow him night and day. Which he’s also spent traveling at taxpayer expense.

The Secret Service keeps tabs on so many of Trump’s family members under the assumption that, should something happen to them, it could put Donald in a hard spot.

“If Eric Trump is traveling and let’s say, God forbid, gets attacked and hurt, killed — imagine the impact, the psychological impact, that would have on the president,” he says. “So by protecting the children, you’re by default protecting the sanctity of the office of the presidency.”

Yeah. Trump might even say “That’s too bad.”
