This last November election brought the United States one step closer to a truly representative democracy when a historic 2,000-plus women won office. In reaction to the grotesque misogyny of Donald Trump and his cronies, millions of people across the country were galvanized to go to the polls and vote for strong and talented women, overwhelmingly on the Democratic side. CNN is now reporting that the House Democratic Women’s Working Group is “inviting female members of both parties to wear white” during Trump’s upcoming State of the Union address.
Rep. Lois Frankel told CNN that the invitation to wear white is to show respect for the women’s suffrage movement and the rights that women across the country have fought for for decades.
Here’s your requisite Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweet, because she’s awesome.
I wore all-white today to honor the women who paved the path before me, and for all the women yet to come.
From suffragettes to Shirley Chisholm, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the mothers of the movement. ⬇️ https://t.co/GBfSSYxbek

Democratic women participated in a similar statement during Trump’s 2017 State of the Union.

Power to the people. Power to the women.
