On Facebook right now, there is a thread on a white supremacist group called Pissed Off White Americans that offers itself as a forum for the grievances of paranoid racists who uphold the conspiracy doctrine of “white genocide,” that is, the perception that a combination of mass immigration and supposed governmental policies that favor minorities over whites are leading to the “extinction” of “white society.” The thread refers to a recent misogynistic slur of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one calling her a “bimbo” with the gathered racists, naturally, wanting to pile on with their racist and misogynistic comments.
I was just examining it to see how this story was playing out on social media and noticed a comment that called for the congresswoman to be murdered. Here is a screen shot
We’ve already had enough political violence by far right racist terrorists. I definitely don’t want to see any more.
Curiously, this page blatantly violates Facebook’s community standards, yet has not been removed by Facbook. According to Facebook’s community standards,
We do not allow hate speech on Facebook because it creates an environment of intimidation and exclusion and in some cases may promote real-world violence.
We define hate speech as a direct attack on people based on what we call protected characteristics — race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, caste, sex, gender, gender identity, and serious disease or disability. We also provide some protections for immigration status. We define attack as violent or dehumanizing speech, statements of inferiority, or calls for exclusion or segregation. We separate attacks into three tiers of severity, as described below.
