As a creator, I always hope my work gains notice, though some followers aren’t as welcome as others.
Since the rise of Donald Trump, YouTube has removed several of my videos that have been the subject of user complaints. These complaining users aren’t up in arms over stolen content or worried my expressions may incite unrest. They are, it seems, upset that I call white supremacists and Nazi assholes, well, white supremacists and Nazi assholes.
The first to get complaints was the song/video “Ain’t Ridin’ with the KKK,” an anti-Klan anthem released on the Fourth of July, 2011 and yanked from YouTube in 2015 after complaints that it was hateful. You be the judge.
Yes, you can see the video on YouTube because I won that appeal. A couple of anti-Trump bits got yanked and not restored.
This morning, I got the following notice from YouTube:
We wanted to let you know our team reviewed your content, and we think it violates our hate speech policy. We know you may not have realized this was a violation of our policies, so we’re not applying a strike to your channel. However, we have removed the following content from YouTube:
Video: Duke Makes Me Puke
We realize this may be disappointing news, but it’s our job to make sure that YouTube is a safe place for all. If you think we’ve made a mistake, you can appeal this decision – you’ll find more details below.
What our policy says
Content glorifying or inciting violence against another person or group of people is not allowed on YouTube. We also don’t allow any content that encourages hatred of another person or group of people based on their membership in a protected group. In June 2019, we announced updates to this policy. We understand you uploaded your content before our policy updates, so we’re not applying a strike to your channel.
Again, I’ll have to let others judge whether or not the content glorifies violence or encourages hate against a person who needs protection. YouTube has pulled the vid from their site, but it can be seen HERE (corrected link to video)
I have appealed the removal with the following letter:
Dear YouTube content moderators:
I am appealing your decision to remove my video, “Duke Makes Me Puke.”
While I freely admit the content is mean-spirited, mocking and arguably puerile, its venom is directed at ONE person, a Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan and self-proclaimed Nazi who has publicly approved the murder of six million European Jews.
Are you seriously arguing that such a person’s delicate feelings should be given special consideration on your platform, that David Duke is a “protected group?” Really? This is “Don’t be evil?”
I understand you are getting complaints about my material from white supremacists and neo-and-old-school-Nazis. This isn’t the first time.
But are you sure you want to be the defenders of Nazis and Klansmen?
We’ll see if they put it back up.
