WTF went on last Oct. 28 to November 7?
October 28: Comey releases letter “reopening” the HRC email investigation. NY Times goes nuts with banner headlines about how it “jolts” the Clinton Campaign. (before there was any time to “jolt.”)
October 30: (two days after the Comey email memo) Harry Reid writes to James Comey:
“In my communications with you and other top officials in the national security community, it has become clear that you possess explosive information about close ties and coordination between Donald Trump, his top advisors, and the Russian government…The public has a right to know this information.”
October 31: David Corn writes an article in Mother Jones: A Veteran Spy Has Given the FBI Information Alleging a Russian Operation to Cultivate Donald Trump.
In the fourth paragraph, he writes the unidentified former spy’s work:
was for an opposition research project originally financed by a Republican client critical of the celebrity mogul. (Before the former spy was retained, the project’s financing switched to a client allied with Democrats.)
(So please, don’t tell me you’re shocked, shocked at the news, Maggie NYT and every hyperventilating right winger since 8:00 tonight. If you hadn’t been willfully ignoring this while obsessing over bullshit server/foundation stories, you might have found out the political crime of the last 241 years happening right in front of you.)
Later, Corn writes:
The former intelligence officer [whom we now know is Steele] says the response from the FBI was “shock and horror.”
A summary memo stated:
“Russian regime has been cultivating, supporting and assisting TRUMP for at least 5 years. Aim, endorsed by PUTIN, has been to encourage splits and divisions in western alliance.” It maintained that Trump “and his inner circle have accepted a regular flow of intelligence from the Kremlin, including on his Democratic and other political rivals.” It claimed that Russian intelligence had “compromised” Trump during his visits to Moscow and could “blackmail him.” It also reported that Russian intelligence had compiled a dossier on Hillary Clinton based on “bugged conversations she had on various visits to Russia and intercepted phone calls.”
Remember, this was October 31, 2016 — still 8 days before the election.
But then, the same day as Corn’s report and two days after Reid’s statement:
October 31: The Times publishes its infamous Investigating Donald Trump, F.B.I. Sees No Clear Link to Russia story relying on:
Law enforcement officials say that none of the investigations so far have found any conclusive or direct link between Mr. Trump and the Russian government. And even the hacking into Democratic emails, F.B.I. and intelligence officials now believe, was aimed at disrupting the presidential election rather than electing Mr. Trump.
[Other sources for the story? Denials by Carter Page and Roger Stone.]
Those “law enforcement officials” and “FBI and intelligence officials” were lying to the NY Times’ face. They may well have been police or FBI close to vicious haters like Giuliani. And the Times didn’t have to wait until after the election to find out that was likely true. They just had to read Corn’s story and follow up. An FBI investigation of Trump/Russia collusion had been going on for many months.
They were criminally lazy or even complicit.
And that Times article effectively kills the Trump/Russia story until after the perp was elected.
November 1-7: Approximately 8 million people vote early, their last information being Hillary Clinton’s supposed “guilt” via Comey, and either nothing or denials about Trump’s (now all but established) connections with Russia.
November 7: Without fanfare, Comey “exonerates” Hillary Clinton — after the 8 million votes were cast and too late for most people voting on election day to find out.
So many questions:
If the DNC was funding Steele and Steele had spilled enough for Corn to find out, why didn’t they do more with this information in the 8 days before the election?
What did other Democrats know and why didn’t they use it?
Why does Times Editor Dean Baquet have a job now. The October 31 article was credulously sourced almost solely on lies and the likely sources having an animus to Hillary Clinton that may have been evident at the time?
Comey knew on October 31 there was an FBI investigation of Trump/Russia and the sources in the Times story were lying.
Didn’t he have an obligation to do something about it when he read the article?
Didn’t he have an obligation to respond to Reid’s letter from Oct. 30 now that his people were disseminating lies to the paper of record?
He had no problem sending information about the emails to Jason Chaffetz, so why did he blow off Reid about Russia.
The result of that political and journalistic malpractice and worse: A stolen Supreme Court seat, Needless suffering and death in Puerto Rico, threats to women’s health, the disabled and the poor, terror for the undocumented and DACA kids, a voter “fraud” / voter suppression panel, brinksmanship with North Korea, needless Qatar-Saudi tension, secret and deadly missions in Niger (after alienating ally Chad) and everything else stemming from the catastrophic vote on November 8.
