Conservative Jennifer Rubin Will NOT Tolerate Any Trump Supporter

A large part of one’s progressive bona fides is the belief no respect can be given even for conservatives who have been “never Trumpers” right from the start. Their previous views and writing over the last three decades made Trump inevitable. I do not disagree that they contributed to Trump’s rise. I do not agree we cannot afford some respect to those who have been never Trumpers from the start. Perhaps it is my incessant belief in people’s better angels, perhaps it is my naivety, but I just cannot internalize it. I think those who have been never Trumpers right from the start represent an admirable “psychotic break” into reality. Joe Scarbarough went from being a flame throwing far right-winger to being damn near a moderate. True, he was desperate to get into bed with Mika and she wasn’t about to let that happen with a flame throwing, Trump supporting, right winger. Joe moderated his views long before Trump, again, perhaps Mika caused it. But, I think it matters that it was Joe who came to the middle, not Mika. Watch Nicole Wallace some time on her own show or Rachel’s show. One can viscerally see and feel that Nicole is charging left despite herself. She has hated Trump from the beginning. My view on Wallace has nothing to do with the fact that I’ve got a raging crush on her now that she’s moderated. The Right Wing is a cult and had been long before Trump. People who declared themselves “never Trumpers” from the start have slowly become … well, people. So, to me it actually does matter when a person goes from always Republican to never Trumper, and then from being a never Trumper to a “Never support people who support Trump..” So, having established that we, opps, I meant “I,” can grant some respect to those who have agreed with me about Trump from the start, let’s read her words: From the Washington Post via Daily Kos (which lacks my genius analysis, pffft) For decades now, Republicans have insisted mass murders with semiautomatic weapons are not reflective of a gun problem. I can no longer comprehend how such a ludicrous assertion is remotely acceptable. But in one sense they are right: It’s not merely Republicans’ indulgence of the National Rifle Association that puts Americans’ lives in jeopardy. It is the support and enabling of a president that inspires white nationalist terrorists – and even denies white nationalism is a problem. Please proceed Jen, even if we definitely don’t get the “no longer” support any Trump supporter part, but anyway: In sum, we are awash in hate crimes and white nationalist-inspired mass murders. We have a president whose words inspire and bolster perpetrators of these heinous acts. That makes Trump not only a moral abomination, which no policy outcome can offset, but a threat to national security. Those encouraged by his words in recent years kill more Americans than Islamist terrorists. If that is not justification for bipartisan repudiation of this president and removal from office at the earliest possible moment I don’t know what is. Those who countenance and support this president for his white-grievance mongering are not merely “deplorable” but dangerous. Okay, wait. That is rather impressive. A Republican calling to remove Trump purely on the basis of his race […]

Wow, Fox News Refusing to Allow a Trump Lie to Stand: Calling Him Out

It is easy to sit back and be all cool about shit, and talk about the rubes who watch Fox News, and the stuff they want to believe so badly that they talk themselves into it. I do challenge people, however, to consider the impact upon you if you unknowingly throw yourself into a highly professional propaganda machine. Propaganda is a well-studied science and no one does it better than the Russians, and their nationalist far-right sympathizers. For that precise reason, it matters when Fox News refuses to back a Trump lie. Indeed, one of Trump’s latest was such whopper that even Neil Cavuto admitted he didn’t even know “where to begin” to debunk the lie. First, the lie, as reported by Huffington Post: Trump on Friday told White House reporters that “the tariffs are not being paid for by our people” but “by China” because “of devaluation and because they’re pumping money in.” “Remember this, our country is taking in billions and billions of dollars from China,” the president added. “We never took in 10 cents from China. And out of that many billions of dollars, we’re taking a part of it and giving it to the farmers because they’ve been targeted by China. The farmers, they come out totally whole.” Do you understand macro-economics? I do not. But, I listen to people who DO understand economics, and I find it straightforward when they explain that the cost of tariffs are simply passed directly on to the consumers. Okay, that makes total sense. Evidently, making sense is important enough to Neil Cavuto that he will – on rare occasions – call Trump out on the lie: “I don’t know where to begin here,” responded Cavuto, who on Wednesday entered into a war of words with Fox Business host Lou Dobbs about the government deficit under Trump. “But just to be clarifying, China isn’t paying these tariffs. You are. You know, indirectly and sometimes directly,” he explained. “It’s passed along to you through American distributors and their counterparts in the United States that buy this stuff from the Chinese and then have to pay these surcharges. Not the Chinese government or China in particular.” Yes, do note that it was Lou Dobbs’ show in which Cavuto appeared, and certainly note that dangerous and never-to-be-sufficiently-damned Lou Dobbs will carry the water for Trump, regardless of the truth. But anytime there is an “argument” at Fox News about Trump, you can bet that over half of Fox’s audience knows it’s due to water finding its way through “truth cracks” in the propaganda dam. The audience may not “care,” they might “immunize” themselves from the truth by not caring, but they do hear it. I find that important. As I noted in a previous article, breaking Trump is about breaking the mystique. The mystique pervades most strongly in the cable propaganda set up specifically to propel him forward. If Fox tells their viewers that Trump lied to them, on any one thing, it makes that voter/viewer more wary of the next lie. And this is not some “meaningless” lie. This is about money in that American’s pocket. If that voter visits Walmart tomorrow and notes the shoes “seem” more expensive than expected, there will be a part of their brain that entertains the possibility: “Am […]

Notre Dame Fire May Be Related To Spate Of Vandalism In Other French Churches

Humanity suffered a grave collective loss today, when Le Cathedral d’Notre Dame was destroyed by fire. The building is 850 years old. It is a blessing in my life that I minored in French and did a semester abroad, living and going to school in Normandie. I went to Notre Dame any number of times and it was always a worthwhile experience. Walking into the building itself brought a sense of timelessness. Weddings, baptisms, funerals, Easter services, all manner of ritual took place within these walls for 850 years. The atmosphere was one of gravitas and one could feel history emanating from the stone walls. The sunlight coming through the ancient stained glass was memorable, even to a child raised in the psychedelic sixties. I can only imagine the wonder that the glass held for travelers visiting Paris for the first time. It had to have been magical. The joy that I felt as a young college student will no longer be felt, at least not in the old Notre Dame, which today was ravaged by flames, and that is a human tragedy. Adding to this sense of morbidity and malaise today, it comes to light that in recent months, other Catholic churches in France have been vandalized. Evidently, in the politics-heavy news cycle of the present day, cases of arson and vandalism in a house of God, once front page stories, are relegated to a much lesser stature. That in itself is a surprising cultural development, when any desecration of a church used to be big news.  It must somehow no longer be the case in the new and frenetic world of the internet-driven, 24-hour news cycle. That’s because a major international story — one involving at least 10 acts of vandalism at Catholic churches in France — went largely unreported (underreported, really) for weeks. The vandalism included everything from Satanic symbols scrawled on walls to shattered statues. That’s right, a rash of fires and other acts of desecration inside Catholic churches — during Lent, even — in a country with a recent history of terrorism somehow didn’t warrant any kind of attention from American news organizations. Even major news organizations, such as The Washington Post, were late to covering it and only did after running a Religion News Service story. This brings us to Monday’s fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, where a massive blaze engulfed the 12th century gothic house of worship. It’s too early to tell if this incident is part of the earlier wave of vandalism, but it certainly comes at a strange time. For now, officials say the blaze remains under investigation. The cathedral has been undergoing some renovation work and the fire may — repeat MAY — have started in one of those areas. It would be crazy to assume there is a connection between all of these fires and acts of vandalism. It would be just as crazy for journalists not to investigate the possibility that there are connections. This is very sobering, indeed. It is tragic to imagine that the national treasure, the human treasure of Notre Dame was ravaged by arson. It may not have been, but absolutely, in light of other incidents in French Catholic churches, the topic demands investigation. The site of the spire tipping over in the […]
