Jay Sekulow is a busy guy. When not playing television lawyer, impeachment disinformation expert and Fox News guest, Sekulow heads up the anti-LGBTQ group American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ). ACLJ was originally the brain child of Pat Robertson, who founded it in 1990, do you love it? And now Sekulow has taken the group all around the world to lobby for anti-gay laws. Media Matters for America: Sekulow’s anti-LGBTQ commentary dates back decades. He wrote his first book — the now-out-of-print From Intimidation to Victory — in 1990 and targeted LGBTQ people with bigoted attacks. In his chapter “Reprogramming Our Children,” he criticized schools for sponsoring presentations in which students were told that “there was nothing wrong with the gay life-style” and then accused the schools of sponsoring “sexual indoctrination” and justifying “perversion.” Sekulow isn’t the only Trump lawyer to promote conversion therapy. Media Matters has previously documented that other members of Trump’s campaign have promoted conversion therapy, including senior Trump legal adviser Jenna Ellis. Sekulow has no problem playing God, either. Sekulow suggested conversion therapy as a way to “change” an LGBTQ person, writing: “There is something wrong with homosexuality, and because its primary expression involves sexual activity, there is something one can do about it: abstain. The mental/emotional aspect for some homosexuals is quite difficult to change, but through Christian counseling and prayer it can often be accomplished.” And he later wrote, “The Bible tells us, and Christian counselors can confirm, that homosexuals and those leaning in that direction do need spiritual help and often professional, unbiased counseling.” Sekulow concluded: “Most school systems are not exposed to such an out-front recruitment for homosexuality. If your schools are, fight it. To admit such a program violates your rights to be protected from the state’s establishing a religion–in this case amorality or secular humanism. There is no consensus that students need so-called ‘counseling’ about homosexuality to discover some innate, pervese sexual identity.” Does anybody remember Anita Bryant? She was a singer who did orange juice commercials back in the 60’s and then she became the voice of the anti-gay movement. She used to talk at that time about “the gay recruiter” a concept which sent gay people hearing it into paroxysms of laughter. The idea was that if the gay recruiter wasn’t in the school preying on the innocent boys and girls, then they wouldn’t know that there was such a thing as being gay and they would therefore be straight. Her theory completely ignores the reality that gay people know they’re gay from a very early age. But it was similar to the theory of the drug dealer on campus “giving away” drugs, in order to get people hooked, another pet idea of Bryant’s compatriots at the time. Likewise, that concept got laughed at, with students at colleges begging to know, “Where oh where on campus are drugs being given away?” and the answer to that was, “Go ask the gay recruiter.” Perhaps the two situations are not totally analogous, but where they connect is that both being gay and using recreational drugs are only made possible by a conspiracy to undermine American values by sending subversive elements into the schools, in this worldview of Anita Bryant’s and now Jay Sekulow’s, in this generation. And does it surprise anyone that Sekulow’s ACLJ is active in Russia and also Zimbawe? ACLJ has pushed for homosexuality […]
Mike Pence’s Gay-Bashing 90’s Record, Arguing Homosexuality Is ‘Learned Behavior’ Comes Back To Bite...
It’s actually somewhat amusing that attempts have even been made recently by the White House to present Mike Pence as anything other than what he is and always has been, a dyed in the wool homophobe, who opposed gay rights legislation from his earliest days as a congressman. You may recall the big to-do recently, when Pence and Mother went to Ireland to have lunch with the gay Prime Minister and his spouse, and how that was touted by Pence’s token gay aide as proof of what a great liberal open minded guy Mike Pence really is. Nobody bought it, and after this exposition from CNN’s K-File, nobody is going to:: Pence argued in the 1990s that, unlike protections for African Americans, homosexuals choose or learn to be gay and was part of a “grassroots-generated movement for recognition of homosexual rights” nationwide. – “Once you identify homosexuals as a minority, then by definition they would need to be afforded constitutional protection,” Pence added. “Up to this point, our legal tradition in America has drawn a line over those things. I do not choose whether I am a black American … the great vast majority of the psychological community says homosexuality at a very minimum is a choice by the individual, and at the maximum, is a learned behavior.” – The American Psychological Association said in 1992 that data did not support the view that homosexuality was a choice and studies at the time in the 1990s suggested homosexuality was biological and genetic. – The arguments made in the 1990s by Pence would echo those he later emphasized when he ran for Congress in 2000 when his platform protested extending civil rights protections to gay Americans. But the 1990s comments show for the first time Pence calling homosexuality a choice and offer a clearer view into Pence’s view on gay Americans at the time. – As president of the conservative think tank Indiana Policy Review Foundation, Pence opposed a vote by the city council of Lafayette, Indiana, to make itself the first city in the state to add sexual orientation to its anti-discrimination law. Designating gay Americans worthy of such protections under the law, Pence said, would open “a Pandora’s Box of legal rights and legal difficulties” and was part of grassroots movements by gay activists for increasing their rights. Just keep thumping the Bible, Mike, with the rest of the fundies and hold the gays down. Or, try to. Pence is a dinosaur and the irony is that he’s part of the group that’s going to be history soon, not the gays that he seeks to persecute and deny basic rights, like employment and housing to. What a great day it will be when the last Pence-ling goes extinct — at least in political life.
The cockles of my heart are so warmed by the fact that Mike and Mother Pence are having lunch with a gay couple, that i may just roast marshmallows. Ain’t it grand how warm and inclusive the Pences are? They’re actually going to sit at the same table and eat food with a gay man and his husband — a union which they have both gone on record disavowing the legality of, declaring it to be contrary to the ways of Gawd. In what has been described as the most desperate and self-serving tweet of this administration to date (and that’s saying a lot) Pence’s token gay deputy press secretary made the announcement of this momentous occasion, the Pences having lunch with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and spouse, the takeaway being that Mike Pence is not anti-gay, because he’s actually willing to sit down with them at the same table and share a meal. Sort of like if the biggest jock in the high school, known for openly favoring the KKK, deigned to eat lunch with the new black kid, to show that he wasn’t a racist. Same difference. To be clear: they expect us to be happy that Pence didn't cancel a meeting with the Prime Minister of Ireland because of the Prime Minister's sexuality. https://t.co/92K6bPl4yP — Pé Resists (@4everNeverTrump) September 3, 2019 LOL. He's so not anti-gay he's willing to meet with a foreign head of government when to do otherwise would create a major international incident. This is tantamount to dancing on a float in a Pride parade. https://t.co/TfC9lsxbLf — Josh Marshall (@joshtpm) September 3, 2019 For those who do not live in Hollywood, let me explain that having lunch with someone does not prove you don't hate them. https://t.co/SwVDzv2xy5 — Joel Stein (@thejoelstein) September 3, 2019 I hope these two gay men that Mike Pence is deigning to break bread with appreciate the fact that Pence is willing to eat with them rather than try to electrocute them out of being gay. One small step for gay rights, one gigantic step for Mike Pence.
Forget about the mouse that roared, this is more like the weasel that wailed. After all the prep and ballyhoo, only a small crowd showed up to the “Make America Straight Again” hate rally in Orlando, Florida, put on by the New Independent Fundamentalist Baptists. The rally was carried live on YouTube, until […]
As well you know, Trump’s evangelical cult members are the strongest supporters in his base. They’re the ones he was referring to when he said he could shoot somebody on 5th Avenue and get away with it. The reason for that is that their leaders have warped Biblical teachings into a perverse and fearful dogma, […]
Folks, this is good news for The Resistance. Mike Pompeo issued a decree recently, reversing an Obama policy (naturally) which permitted U.S. embassies to fly the rainbow colored flag in honor of Pride Month. In Boston Tea Party-esque defiance, Pompeo’s orders are being ignored and the rainbow banner yet waves. The United States Embassy in […]
Ron Calzone is an activist in Missouri. He spoke recently at a Missouri House Committee on General Law, which was hearing testimony on bills addressing discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. He not only thinks discriminating is a good thing, like Don Quixote, he thinks it’s a holy quest. Kansas City Star: “I believe that we have a God-given right to discriminate,” he told the committee. “We actually have a God-given responsibility, a duty, to sometimes discriminate,” he added. Asked if he believed a restaurant owner could eject someone based on race or religion or gender, Calzone said yes. “If a restaurant owner doesn’t want to serve people with freckles, that should be his choice,” he told the group. “Forcing someone to serve someone they do not want to serve is a form of slavery,” he told The Star Editorial Board in an email. Bottom line, one of the bills being considered is one headed by Missouri Rep. Greg Razer, who is seeking protections for LGBTQ Missourians. He has until May 17, when the legislature adjourns, to get it passed, and according to this editorial, “absent a miracle, his anti-discrimination bill will die” — which means that it will still be okay to deny a Missourian a job or kick him or her out of an apartment because somebody thinks the tenant might be gay. This is medieval, but it is real nonetheless. These backward notions and hateful people have always been with it, but in the Trump era, they feel empowered to come out of the woodwork and spew their poison. I hope that the good people of Missouri stand up to the bigots, because this is not an attractive advertisement for any state.
Brunei sounds like Hell, or at least it will do until the real thing comes along. Brunei, a country on the island of Borneo, recently passed a truly horrific law, stating that Muslims who are gay will be stoned, or whipped to death, if found out. The same punishment also goes for sodomy, rape, or adultery. Bear in mind, this is a country where the law prescribes amputation of a hand or foot for stealing a loaf of bread. Actor and human rights activist George Clooney has called for a boycott of nine Brunei-owned hotels in retaliation. RawStory: “Every single time we stay at or take meetings at or dine at any of these nine hotels we are putting money directly into the pockets of men who choose to stone and whip to death their own citizens for being gay or accused of adultery,” Clooney wrote on website Deadline Hollywood. “I’ve learned over years of dealing with murderous regimes that you can’t shame them. But you can shame the banks, the financiers and the institutions that do business with them and choose to look the other way,” he added. The nine hotels are located in the US, Britain, France and Italy. This is a good proposal and a good beginning. It’s also good that American citizens are taking a firm moral stance on this issue, since our government can’t seem to cope with this crisis, any better than it’s coping with anything else right now.
Ever let yourself slip into thinking Vice President Mike Pence would be better for our country than President Donald Trump? Think again. The latest wake-up call comes from Pence’s choice for his incoming chief of...
Evangelical wingnut Pat Robertson got his knickers all in a twist this morning. He was incensed over an appellate court in Philadelphia considering the issue of whether to renew a Catholic adoption agency’s contract with the City of Philadelphia. The agency doesn’t want to place foster children in LGBT homes, which is a violation of Philadelphia’s non-discrimination policy, and so the Catholic agency might lose it’s contract. That hits Robertson right where he lives, because he’s been hoping like hell that he can make his, and Mike Pence’s, “religious liberty” b.s. the law of the land, and send human rights and the LGBT people back to medieval times. So Robertson went on an epic rant. Right Wing Watch: “The incredible thing about the homosexuals is they are willing to destroy lives and destroy the whole fabric of society so long as they and their weird way of doing sex is legitimized,” he said. “That’s what they want and they will take away everything; they will destroy marriage, they will destroy families, they will destroy, in this case, the foster children. They are willing to tear down the entire edifice in order to have the majority of people recognize the way they do sex.” “I think if Christians begin to speak out and insist that if some politician goes along with the gay agenda, that they’re going to be voted out of office,” Robertson added. “Once they get that message, they’ll start saying, ‘We want to listen to the majority of the people in our society.’ Until they do, that small minority is going to be dominating everything we do and every aspect of our lives.” Christians taking over the government is not a new idea to Robertson. He started preaching that particular gospel back in the 80’s. Yuricare Report: “During the 1980’s I began taping and transcribing Pat Robertson’s 700 Club show because of the alarming anti-Christian political philosophy he was endorsing. He began a drum beat for drastic political and cultural changes to this country. Robertson’s guests did something I’d never seen before: they reversed the scriptures and called it immoral for the citizens to help the poor through taxation, which, by the way is expressly required in the Old Testament. The accusation was and is that taxation robbed the rich to help the poor. On April 4, 1985, Billy Graham appeared on the show, and in a startling announcement said, “I’m for evangelicals “… getting control of the Congress, getting control of the bureaucracy, getting control of the executive branch of government. If we leave it to the other side we’re going to be lost.” On September 25, 1985, Tim LaHaye, appeared in a film clip with Phyllis Schlafly on the show. In that clip, he laid out the plan to take over the government of the United States. He said: “Suppose that every Bible believing church—all 110,000—decided to…raise up one person to run for public office and win… If every church in the next ten years did that, we would have more Christians in office than there are positions…there are only 97,000 elective offices.” Robertson and his cronies are serious as a heart attack about stacking the courts with anti-gay judges and electing anti-gay politicians. In his rant on television Monday about the Philadelphia case, he made the point that the gay population is only two percent of the country. Robertson […]
