Forget about the mouse that roared, this is more like the weasel that wailed. After all the prep and ballyhoo, only a small crowd showed up to the “Make America Straight Again” hate rally in Orlando, Florida, put on by the New Independent Fundamentalist Baptists. The rally was carried live on YouTube, until […]
As well you know, Trump’s evangelical cult members are the strongest supporters in his base. They’re the ones he was referring to when he said he could shoot somebody on 5th Avenue and get away with it. The reason for that is that their leaders have warped Biblical teachings into a perverse and fearful dogma, […]
Folks, this is good news for The Resistance. Mike Pompeo issued a decree recently, reversing an Obama policy (naturally) which permitted U.S. embassies to fly the rainbow colored flag in honor of Pride Month. In Boston Tea Party-esque defiance, Pompeo’s orders are being ignored and the rainbow banner yet waves. The United States Embassy in […]
Ron Calzone is an activist in Missouri. He spoke recently at a Missouri House Committee on General Law, which was hearing testimony on bills addressing discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. He not only thinks discriminating is a good thing, like Don Quixote, he thinks it’s a holy quest. Kansas City Star: “I believe that we have a God-given right to discriminate,” he told the committee. “We actually have a God-given responsibility, a duty, to sometimes discriminate,” he added. Asked if he believed a restaurant owner could eject someone based on race or religion or gender, Calzone said yes. “If a restaurant owner doesn’t want to serve people with freckles, that should be his choice,” he told the group. “Forcing someone to serve someone they do not want to serve is a form of slavery,” he told The Star Editorial Board in an email. Bottom line, one of the bills being considered is one headed by Missouri Rep. Greg Razer, who is seeking protections for LGBTQ Missourians. He has until May 17, when the legislature adjourns, to get it passed, and according to this editorial, “absent a miracle, his anti-discrimination bill will die” — which means that it will still be okay to deny a Missourian a job or kick him or her out of an apartment because somebody thinks the tenant might be gay. This is medieval, but it is real nonetheless. These backward notions and hateful people have always been with it, but in the Trump era, they feel empowered to come out of the woodwork and spew their poison. I hope that the good people of Missouri stand up to the bigots, because this is not an attractive advertisement for any state.
Brunei sounds like Hell, or at least it will do until the real thing comes along. Brunei, a country on the island of Borneo, recently passed a truly horrific law, stating that Muslims who are gay will be stoned, or whipped to death, if found out. The same punishment also goes for sodomy, rape, or adultery. Bear in mind, this is a country where the law prescribes amputation of a hand or foot for stealing a loaf of bread. Actor and human rights activist George Clooney has called for a boycott of nine Brunei-owned hotels in retaliation. RawStory: “Every single time we stay at or take meetings at or dine at any of these nine hotels we are putting money directly into the pockets of men who choose to stone and whip to death their own citizens for being gay or accused of adultery,” Clooney wrote on website Deadline Hollywood. “I’ve learned over years of dealing with murderous regimes that you can’t shame them. But you can shame the banks, the financiers and the institutions that do business with them and choose to look the other way,” he added. The nine hotels are located in the US, Britain, France and Italy. This is a good proposal and a good beginning. It’s also good that American citizens are taking a firm moral stance on this issue, since our government can’t seem to cope with this crisis, any better than it’s coping with anything else right now.
Ever let yourself slip into thinking Vice President Mike Pence would be better for our country than President Donald Trump? Think again. The latest wake-up call comes from Pence’s choice for his incoming chief of...
Evangelical wingnut Pat Robertson got his knickers all in a twist this morning. He was incensed over an appellate court in Philadelphia considering the issue of whether to renew a Catholic adoption agency’s contract with the City of Philadelphia. The agency doesn’t want to place foster children in LGBT homes, which is a violation of Philadelphia’s non-discrimination policy, and so the Catholic agency might lose it’s contract. That hits Robertson right where he lives, because he’s been hoping like hell that he can make his, and Mike Pence’s, “religious liberty” b.s. the law of the land, and send human rights and the LGBT people back to medieval times. So Robertson went on an epic rant. Right Wing Watch: “The incredible thing about the homosexuals is they are willing to destroy lives and destroy the whole fabric of society so long as they and their weird way of doing sex is legitimized,” he said. “That’s what they want and they will take away everything; they will destroy marriage, they will destroy families, they will destroy, in this case, the foster children. They are willing to tear down the entire edifice in order to have the majority of people recognize the way they do sex.” “I think if Christians begin to speak out and insist that if some politician goes along with the gay agenda, that they’re going to be voted out of office,” Robertson added. “Once they get that message, they’ll start saying, ‘We want to listen to the majority of the people in our society.’ Until they do, that small minority is going to be dominating everything we do and every aspect of our lives.” Christians taking over the government is not a new idea to Robertson. He started preaching that particular gospel back in the 80’s. Yuricare Report: “During the 1980’s I began taping and transcribing Pat Robertson’s 700 Club show because of the alarming anti-Christian political philosophy he was endorsing. He began a drum beat for drastic political and cultural changes to this country. Robertson’s guests did something I’d never seen before: they reversed the scriptures and called it immoral for the citizens to help the poor through taxation, which, by the way is expressly required in the Old Testament. The accusation was and is that taxation robbed the rich to help the poor. On April 4, 1985, Billy Graham appeared on the show, and in a startling announcement said, “I’m for evangelicals “… getting control of the Congress, getting control of the bureaucracy, getting control of the executive branch of government. If we leave it to the other side we’re going to be lost.” On September 25, 1985, Tim LaHaye, appeared in a film clip with Phyllis Schlafly on the show. In that clip, he laid out the plan to take over the government of the United States. He said: “Suppose that every Bible believing church—all 110,000—decided to…raise up one person to run for public office and win… If every church in the next ten years did that, we would have more Christians in office than there are positions…there are only 97,000 elective offices.” Robertson and his cronies are serious as a heart attack about stacking the courts with anti-gay judges and electing anti-gay politicians. In his rant on television Monday about the Philadelphia case, he made the point that the gay population is only two percent of the country. Robertson […]
We rightly point out all too often when Republicans are out to perpetrate some evil upon us, so it is only right to praise them when they try to do some good. This one is for Utah State Reps Dan McCray and Craig Hall. NBC News “SALT LAKE CITY — Two Republican lawmakers proposed a ban on gay conversion therapy for minors in conservative Utah on Thursday, a plan that’s been hailed as a milestone by advocates and won’t be opposed by the influential Mormon church. Republican Rep. Dan McCay acknowledged he isn’t a typical sponsor for such a measure, but he said it’s an important way to support LGBT youth amid an alarming spike in youth suicide. “This is the Utah we want. This the Utah we’re all going to fight for, for the rest of our time so we deliver a place to you that you are welcome,” he said. The plan would prohibit any treatment aimed at changing sexual orientation or gender identity, which has ranged from talk therapy to practices like electric shock. Therapists who practice it could lose their license. “Conversion therapy has been proven to be not effective, and is particularly harmful to youth,” said Republican chief sponsor Rep. Craig Hall.” Well, that’s refreshing. First Tiny T-Rexes and now, two decent Republicans. What wonders will Utah produce next?
Mike “conversion therapy” Pence isn’t the only one in his household with a vitriolic anti-gay stance. His wife, Karen, aka “Mother,” worked for the twelve years Pence was in Congress at Immanuel Christian School in Northern Virginia, and she has returned there to work two days a week as an art teacher. Immanuel distinguishes itself from other institutions of learning by making educators “sign a pledge not to engage in homosexual activity or violate the ‘unique roles of male and female.’” Huffington Post: “Moral misconduct which violates the bona fide occupational qualifications for employees includes, but is not limited to, such behaviors as the following: heterosexual activity outside of marriage (e.g., premarital sex, cohabitation, extramarital sex), homosexual or lesbian sexual activity, polygamy, transgender identity, any other violation of the unique roles of male and female, sexual harassment, use or viewing of pornographic material or websites,” says the application. The application says that the school believes “marriage unites one man and one woman” and that “a wife is commanded to submit to her husband as the church submits to Christ.” The application asks potential employees to explain their view of the “creation/evolution debate.” The “parent agreement” asks parents to cooperate in its “biblical morality” policy. Under this policy, parents are to acknowledge the sanctity of marriage as a strictly heterosexual practice. Families who condone, practice or support “sexual immorality, homosexual activity or bi-sexual activity” go against the principles of the school, per the document. Immanuel is a private school, and private schools may discriminate on the basis of sexual identity. Oh, and that’s a pretty nifty job application that asks prospective employees to weigh in on the “creation/evolution debate.” Righto. The world is only 6,000 years old and so forth. The debate that intrigues me is “Who is worse? Trump or Pence?” Now that’s a hard topic to tackle because Trump is a destructive blowhard, but Pence with his fundie, wingnut views is in many ways even more monstrous. We need to run them both out of town.
