Trump Enters Election Year 2020 in Historically Huge Hole

We need this, all the other news stinks, and that’s not the only thing. My dog got a direct spray from a skunk last night. You have no idea … Trump enters 2020 – an election year (!) – at a historically low approval rating, one that spells doom for presidents, according to 538, via Rawstory: President Donald Trump enters 2020 as the most unpopular president to seek reelection since former President Gerald Ford. Yes, he does continue to remind us that he’s got it worse than any other president, ever, so we knew it was bad. It isn’t the worst in history, but close, and Gerald Ford likely isn’t the bar one wants to clear as the goal. According to a new analysis of opinion polls by FiveThirtyEight elections analyst Nathaniel Rakich, Trump enters 2020 with an approval rating of just 42.6 percent, which is the lowest approval rating for an incumbent entering an election year since Ford entered 1976 with an approval rating of 39.3 percent. He cannot win if he stays at 42.6. On the other hand, he need not bounce up all that high to compete for an electoral college win. He would need to be around 45 or so, minimum, and just bank on the Democrat coming in at 48-49 percent of the popular vote. I suspect Trump’s campaign has already conceded an popular vote loss, again. Regardless, it would seem Trump needs at least 45 percent of the vote to have a chance, which isn’t too far from 42.6. Let us also point out a few things that could sour Trump’s outlook and drive that approval rating down, because I think 42.6 is Trump’s ceiling right now. First, and most obviously, the impeachment thing remains hanging out there, unpredictable as to impact, but an impact it will have. If enough evidence comes out that the “Hoax!” thing rings hollow, Trump could lose that 2.6 that keeps him above 40% approval ratings. He could lose 10 points off his current rating, and still skate a conviction. Second, if Trump puts the nation in a situation where there is a stalement of some kind with Iran, he will lose support, as well he should. He has eight months to endure increasing hostilities (he is not going to move for peace), and some American losses. Americans won’t tolerate seeing their sons and daughters killed in furtherance of Trump’s wag the dog effort. His objective is too obvious. We also have decisions coming down the road regarding Trump’s taxes and financial documents. I have always believed that this is the quickest route to getting Trump out of office. Having a direct conflict – on paper – with Russia would be something even the Republicans likely cannot get around. Last, there is the economy. We are fortunate it has continued to be “strong,” at least by the standard used by the wealthy. But if the markets start diving down, Trump always panics, as well he should. Very little can help a president that Wall Street wants gone. So, some sweet-smelling stuff on an otherwise foul day. Jesus Christ at Walmart, I need to find something to “cure” the dog, because it is awful. Direct spray from a skunk in the last 12 hours in pretty pungent, almost as much […]
