Great news we’ve all been longing to hear, but why has it taken 7 weeks?

Capitol Police said Friday that they are investigating allegations by Democratic members of Congress that Republican lawmakers gave tours of the Capitol to supporters of President Donald Trump a day before a pro-Trump mob rioted there.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif, on Friday warned of possible criminal prosecutions if a member of Congress is found to have abetted the rioters.

“In order to serve here with each other, we must trust that people have respect for their oath of office, respect for this institution,” she said.

“If in fact it is found that members of Congress were accomplices to this insurrection, if they aided and abetted the crime, there may have to be actions taken beyond the Congress in terms of prosecution for that,” the speaker said.

U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D, NJ-11) demanded an investigation into members of Congress whom she said gave “reconnaissance” tours one day before the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Thirty other members of Congress have joined her in requesting an investigation.

“I also want the members of Congress . . . that incited this violent crowd, those members of Congress that helped our President undermine our Democracy,” she said In her Facebook live speech. “I’m going to see that they are held accountable, and, if necessary, insure that they don’t serve in Congress.”

Sherrill said she wants the rioters brought to justice.

How much more proof is needed?

Let’s not forget what was in the news that same day…

The Washingtonian, an online forum for fans of President Trump, is on fire Tuesday with members’ plans to travel to DC for pro-Trump rallies. Since the rallies coincide with Congress’s expected confirmation of Joe Biden’s victory over Trump, a subset of’s posters have discussed ways they might “occupy” or “storm” the US Capitol to make citizens’ arrests of lawmakers who hold old-fashioned views like honoring state-certified election results.

Eva Malecki, a spokesperson for the US Capitol Police, declined to comment on the MAGA fans’ thought experiments but tells Washingtonian that “While we do not discuss the means, methods, or specific resources used to carry out our protective responsibilities, the United States Capitol Police has comprehensive security plans in place and we continuously monitor and assess new and emerging threats, with the overall goal of keeping those within the Capitol Complex safe and secure.”
