This is what I get for getting out over my skis. I just posted an article about how Mitt Romney is uniquely prepared to give Traitor Tot maximum payback. But I never considered that another GOP Senator might jump the gun and convict Trump even before the vote.
Retiring GOP Senator Lamar Alexander has been a hot topic candidate on the fence as to whether or not more witnesses and documents are needed. In a statement released after the completion of today’s proceedings, Alexander chilled the suspense by stating that he will not vote for more witnesses and evidence, but it’s the reason why he will be voting against the motion for witnesses that is going to give Traitor Tot a coronary. From his statement;
It was inappropriate for the president to ask a foreign leader to investigate his political opponent and to withhold United States aid to encourage that investigation. When elected officials inappropriately interfere with such investigations, it undermines the principle of equal justice under the law. But the Constitution does not give the Senate the power to remove the president from office and ban him from this year’s ballot simply for actions that are inappropriate.
This is stunning! Senior Senator Lamar Alexander, a close friend and long time fellow GPO Senator of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, doesn’t want to hear from more witnesses. But that’s not because he’s being obstructionist. It’s because he doesn’t need to hear anymore, Trump is as guilty as original sin.
Alexander’s statement is a stinging rebuke to Trump and his third rate defense team, and a full throated endorsement of the case that the House put together. But only so far. While Alexander is perfectly clear in his own mind that Trump fornicated the canine in asking for help from Zelinsky and the Ukraine on dirt on Biden, he also slapped the House for what he called a silly claim of obstructing congress, clearly indicating that he also believes that the House should have gone through the whole process of compelling testimony before calling it obstruction.
This by no means means that the quest for additional witnesses is dead, but Alexanders statement is a clear admission, from a staunch, lifelong conservative Republican, that the sitting President of the United States broke the law, and then tried to cover it up. It won’t stop Trump’s acquittal, but it will be a powerful and convincing voice that may provide cover for others to call it what it was. The only remaining question is whether or not Alexander will cash that check he just wrote in his statement tonight by voting “yes” to convict Trump of abuse of power in the well of the Senate. Don’t touch that dial.
