The leader of the Senate GOP campaign arm Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), has called for embattled Senate candidate Roy Moore’s expulsion from the Senate in the event that he wins the December special election. The Hill:

“I believe the individuals speaking out against Roy Moore spoke with courage and truth, proving he is unfit to serve in the United States Senate and he should not run for office,” Gardner said

“If he refuses to withdraw and wins, the Senate should vote to expel him, because he does not meet the ethical and moral requirements of the United States Senate.”

Under the Senate rules, a vote of two-thirds of the body can expel a Senator. That would be historic — the Senate hasn’t expelled a member since 1862.

It’s too late to take Moore’s name off the state ballot, so even if he listens to Mitch McConnell and withdraws, his name will still appear on the ballot. With this new development, however, if the Alabama State Republican party votes to dump Moore, even he is elected. he would not be eligible for the seat by state law.

But neither Moore nor the state party is showing any indication of doing that. So it’s possible that Moore will remain on the ballot as an active candidate despite the protestations of Washington. If he wins, the Senate would be faced with the question of whether to seat him or expel him from office immediately.
