Cornell Professor Calls for a Moratorium on the Use of “Washington”...

(Above: Cornell History Professor Lawrence Glickman) Cornell History Professor Lawrence Glickman uses Twitter to call for a ban on the use of the word “Washington” to smear Democrats by lumping them in with the intentionally bad governing practices of the GOP. Appropriately he uses Maggie Haberman to illustrate this practice, though he could just as easy use Chuck Todd, Andrea Mitchell or any other of the numerous journalists who employ this method of gas-lighting the American people. (Below is the Twitter unroll of his tweets, but I’ll include his first, in case you want to peruse the comments.) “I hereby call for total and complete shutdown on the word “Washington,”which both ignores the issue of asymmetric polarization AND materially aids the GOP by serving up their chief talking point that “Washington is broken” and government is disfunctional. Washington is flirting with a financial crisis. No one has a plan to stop it – CNNPolitics https://t.co/GhMTVAJYcm — Maggie Haberman (@maggieNYT) May 12, 2019 The GOP has developed a remarkably blinkered conception of what governance means. Beyond tax cuts for the rich, cruelty toward the poor (especially if they are women, nonwhite, LBGTQ, or Muslim),military spending, and court packing, many members of the party disdain governing. Tea Party Rep. Raul Labrador spoke truthfully when he used the word”governing” with air quotes. As he told @RyanLizza,“If people just want to ‘govern,’ which means bringing more government, they’re always going to choose the Democrat.” Linked New Yorker article As Labrador’s quotation suggests, the GOP has shifted from a distrust of government to a disdain for doing the actual work of governing.Michael Lewis’s book, “The Fifth Risk” shows the dire consequences of this attitude, by examining how the Trump administration runs things. Employing the word “Washington” rather than naming the Republican Party, creates a “both sides do it,” style of reporting that helps the GOP whose goal is to create maximum cynicism about the ability of government to accomplish anything constructive. The linked @CNN article, discussing the “hard consequences” of failing to agree on a budget says, “Democrats would have to accept equally painful cuts to domestic programs, which have long been their top priority in talks.” BTW, the “painful cut” the GOP would have to make, according to this article, is in defense spending, an area where spending has been huge. Why do Democrats “have to accept equally painful cuts to domestic programs”? Because this fits with the symmetrical narrative. The piece notes,” The talks are playing out in the wake of Trump’s tax reform, which increased the deficit.” Rather than report that Dems “have to” accept “painful cuts, ” as if there were no alternative, another angle of reporting on this would be to highlight GOP hypocrisy. So please @CNN and other media outlets, let’s have a moratorium on the word “Washington,” which is often used imprecisely and not only shifts blame from the GOP but actually amplifies their message. It is not a neutral phrase but a partisan one. Rather than the headline “Washington Is Flirting With a Debt Crisis,” how about, “GOP Tax Cuts and Demands for Military Spending Make Debt Crisis Likely.” Rather than a misleading frame that serves the interests of the GOP, make it one that accurately assesses the situation. I will also include this link to the Michael Lewis (Moneyball, The Big […]

Rebuffed By The President Elect of Ukraine, Rudy Giuliani Calls Off...

Late last night drumpf fluffin’ delusional former Mayor Rudy Giuliani called off his mission to Ukraine to dig up most likely non-existent dirt on Democratic Presidential hopeful Joe Biden… AP “I’ve decided … I’m not going to go to the Ukraine,” Giuliani told Fox News Friday night. “I’m not going to go because I think I’m walking into a group of people that are enemies of the president … in some cases enemies of the United States, and in one case an already convicted person who has been found to be involved in assisting the Democrats with the 2016 election.” His statement left many unanswered questions about what Giuliani might do about his Ukraine concerns. Earlier, Giuliani had said he would to travel to Kiev in the coming days to urge the Ukrainian government to conduct a pair of investigations: one on the origins of special counsel Robert Mueller’s recently concluded investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, the other on the involvement of former Vice President Joe Biden’s son in a gas company owned by a Ukrainian oligarch. Giuliani’s plan had seemed poised to create an unprecedented moment, that of the lawyer of the president of the United States seeking foreign assistance in damaging his political rivals. To Democrats, it was a blatant evocation of Russia’s meddling on behalf of Trump when he defeated Hillary Clinton.” That “group of people”, it turns out, include The Ukraine’s President elect, Volodymyr Zelensky, who, apparently doesn’t want to meet with Hiz Zonner Gasbag… The Independent: “A controversial plan to leverage Ukrainian politics in the 2020 American election campaign looks to have come unstuck, with The Independent learning president-elect Volodymyr Zelensky may now refuse to meet Mr Trump’s lawyer Rudy Guiliani when he arrives in Kiev later this month.”  The allegation is that Biden might have done something improper to influence the corruption investigation into Burisma, a company his son Hunter once worked for… Those accusations may have more to do with saving the political fortunes of Ukraine’s top prosecutor Yuriy Lutsenko, who is on the outs with the new administration and may be seeking his own foreign allies for HIS 2020 re-election bid. (Parens mine) “The (Giuliani) initiative had followed a curious announcement by Mr Lutsenko in March that he was investigating whether Mr Biden had pushed for the removal of his predecessor in the job, Viktor Shokin, to stop an investigation into his son’s firm. That Mr Lutsenko’s interpretation did not seem to have any factual basis — Mr Shokin was still very much in office when the investigation was dropped, and only fired several months later — does not seem to have dimmed Mr Guiliani’s enthusiasm.” One of President elect Zelensky’s political allies thinks he has the dirt on the prosecutor’s sudden enthusiasm for conspiracy theory: “Everyone understands it is a desperate attempt from a bankrupt prosecutor,” said Sergii Leshchenko, a reformist MP connected to the Zelensky team, and who has also been attacked by Trump allies over his role in publishing the Manafort ledger data. “Lutsenko doesn’t want to leave the prosecutors office because he has nowhere else to go to…. “Lutshenko has decided his only way to cling onto the prosecutor’s office is with the help of a Trump ally,” he said. “It may not be the last fairytale we hear from him.” So, unfortunately for […]

Trump Supporting ‘Turning Point USA’ Leader Caught on Video Being Racist...

His friend does most of the talking but Turning Point USA Las Vegas Chapter leader Riley Grisar is literally in bed with her giving the white power hand sign: Turning Point USA was founded and is led by Trump supporter Charlie Kirk: Donald Trump Jr. spoke at its “Summit Action Meeting” just last year and in 2016. Politico “At the center of the puzzle of Turning Point USA stands one person: 24-year-old Charlie Kirk, the founder, public face and chief fundraiser for Turning Point USA. He started the group just one day after he graduated from Wheeling High School in suburban Chicago, saying back then that Turning Point USA’s mission was to cheerlead for the free market. The donors I spoke to for this story still see that as central to this mission. (“One thing I like about Turning Point,” Willis says, “is that it is educating these kids, right in front of their socialist professors’ faces, that what they are being told about capitalism is wrong.”) But Kirk, not unlike the GOP overall, has become split between Trump—an ardent trade protectionist whose policies could push the federal deficit over $1 trillion—and the free-market, limited-government principles espoused in the group’s charter. Kirk spent the last several months of the 2016 presidential election cycle working on social media outreach for the Trump campaign, building close ties with the Trump family. Donald Jr., as the headline speaker at Turning Point USA’s annual summit in December, exchanged bro hugs with Kirk before taking the stage. The president himself called Kirk “a great warrior” at a White House conference on Millennials this past March.” This video might get lost in the general turmoil of drumpf’s rolling goat rodeo of criminality and corruption but it should be really bad news for Team Trump, Charlie Kirk and Jr. But fk all those guys that’s what happens when you get in bed with racists and anti-Semites. Texas Republican Calls Vaccines “Sorcery” Twitter Gives Him Some of That...

You really can’t make this sh*t up. TPM “It began on Tuesday when he attacked Dr. Peter Hotez, an outspoken advocate for vaccination. “You are bought and paid for by the biggest special interest in politics,” Stickland tweeted. “Do our state a favor and mind your own business. Parental rights mean more to us than your self enriching ‘science.’” Hotez responded, “Sir, as you know, I don’t take a dime from the vaccine industry. I develop neglected disease vaccines for the world’s poorest people.” “Make the case for your sorcery to consumers on your own dime,” the Texas lawmaker replied.” Twitter conjures up some responses:

LOL. George Clooney PSA – ‘Rampant Dumbf–kery’ Is Destroying the...

In the wake of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo saying that “steady reductions in sea ice are opening new passageways and new opportunities for trade” Jimmy Kimmel and George Clooney have created a Public Service Announcement warning of the dangers of ‘Rampant Dumbf—kery’ which is, of course, more epidemic in the US of A than measles. Watch Below. (closed captioned) “The volumes of invaluable knowledge gathered over centuries are now threatened by an epidemic of dumbf–king idiots saying dumbf–king things.” “Dumbs–t is highly contagious infecting the mind of even the most stable geniuses.” “Rampant dumbf–kery now threatens our health, our security and our planet,” Please give to “”United to Defeat Untruthful Misinformation and Support Science (UDUMASS).” “Just $20 will convince one f–king idiot that climate change is real,” Clooney said. “$50 will teach five brainless dumbf–ks to vaccinate their kids and $200 will teach dips–t knuckledraggers that dinosaurs existed, but not at the same time as people.” “Together we can win the fight against dumf–kiness”  ………………………………………………………… Well, that remains to be seen, George, and fighting the combined deep pockets of the Kochs, Robert Mercer, and Sheldon Addelson will take a sh*tload of $20 donations. Trump Was Lying About Carrier Task Force Deployment to Iran. Big...

So, a few days ago Trump trotted out John Bolton to threaten Iran, saying the deployment was meant “to send a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime that any attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force.” Of course that turns out to be utter nonsense as the deployment was planned months ago. Breaking Defense “WASHINGTON:  The day after the White House released a stern statement announcing the immediate deployments of an aircraft carrier strike group and bomber wing to the Persian Gulf to deter an unnamed Iranian threat, Navy chief Adm. John Richardson was put in what has become a familiar position for the Pentagon brass: explaining a surprise White House statement on a controversial topic. In response to National Security Advisor Advisor John Bolton’s Sunday evening statement that the forces were being dispatched to the Gulf in response to “a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings,” by Iran, Richardson said Monday that, essentially, the deployment was just business as usual. “The Abraham Lincoln Strike Group was planned to deploy for some time now,” Richardson told the SeaAirSpace conference. He touted the Lincoln’s new route to the Gulf as an example of “dynamic force employment,” a new Navy tactic that is meant to surprise potential adversaries by having US ships show up off their coastlines without warning. He didn’t explain how a White House press release is an example of tactical surprise.” Not only did Trump and Bolton fail to distract from the political calamity du jour, they also blew the primary mission of the deployment, to achieve tactical surprise. Longest Serving Republican in Iowa Legislature Switches Parties Because… Trump.

(Above: Andy McKean) Andy McKean has served in the Iowa State House for a total of 24 years and chances are he would still be in the GOP if not for one thing…Donald Trump. Bleeding Heartland “State Representative Andy McKean has left the Republican caucus. His official page on the Iowa legislature’s website now lists “no party specified,” and the Iowa House Republicans website no longer lists him as a member. His legislative page also indicates that he has lost all House committee assignments, as of April 23. McKean had chaired the House Ethics Committee and served on the Environmental Protection, Judiciary, Local Government, and State Government committees. A lifelong Republican until this week, McKean served in the Iowa House for fourteen years and in the Senate for ten years before retiring from the legislature in 2002. He later was elected several times as a Jones County supervisor before running for House district 58, an open seat, in 2016. McKean won re-election with nearly 70 percent of the vote in 2018, even though his district has long had a Democratic voter registration advantage. McKean has voted against some high-profile Republican bills, including the 2017 legislation to eviscerate public employee collective bargaining rights and the 2018 effort to ban most abortions after a fetal heartbeat could be detected. He has opposed this year’s proposals to change Iowa’s system for choosing judges and add a surcharge to small-scale solar power users. McKean also voted against a bill to allow supervised children to hunt deer with a “pistol or revolver.” Yes, he has disagreed with some of the Republican Parties more extreme positions in recent years but chances are he would still be there, instead of switching parties (the Bleeding Hearland piece catches up with that further down the page) if not for one big orange impediment…Trump. From his announcement, read in the Iowa Senate chamber:  “I might have limped along attempting to work within my caucus for what I felt was best for the people I represent if it hadn’t been for another factor. With the 2020 presidential election looming on the horizon, I feel, as a Republican, that I need to be able to support the standard bearer of our party. Unfortunately, that is something I’m unable to do. I believe that it is just a matter of time before our country pays a heavy price for President Trump’s reckless spending and short-sighted financial policies, his erratic, destabilizing foreign policy, and his disregard for environmental concerns. Furthermore, he sets, in my opinion, a poor example for the nation and particularly for our children by personally insulting, often in a crude and juvenile fashion, those who disagree with him, being a bully at a time when we’re attempting to discourage bullying, his frequent disregard for the truth, and has willingness to ridicule or marginalize people for their appearance, ethnicity, or disability. I believe that his actions have coarsened political discourse, have resulted in unprecedented divisiveness, and have created an atmosphere that is a breeding ground for hateful rhetoric and actions. Some would excuse this behavior as telling it like it is and the new normal. If this is the new normal, I want no part of it. Unacceptable behavior should be called out for what is and Americans of all parties should insist on something far better in the leader of their country and the free world.” For those of you Twitter enabled here is […]
