There’s always a rooster crowing somewhere, as Donald Trump denies knowing something else.

How odd was it that Paul Manafort’s lawyer emerged from the courtroom and spoke to the press, not to defend his client on any of the twelve charges leveled against him, but to throw Donald Trump a lifeline? Very, very odd. Odd to the “who’s paying this guy anyway?” level of odd.

The “proven to be a liar” part of that statement? That would be the time that Papadopoulos lied to the FBI—in an effort to protect the Trump campaign from his connections to Russia. Please, all people who have worked for and with Donald Trump, please observe how Trump not only turned his back on Papadopoulos, he used his former adviser’s efforts to protect Trump as a weapon against him. Donald Trump is professional grade selfishness.

After all, it’s not as if Trump himself introduced Papadopoulos as his foreign adviser.

“George Papadopoulos, he’s an energy and oil consultant, excellent guy”

But Trump does have other concerns this morning. He wants the world to stop paying attention to these trivial squabbles and get back to what’s important … his trivial fake squabbles.

Hear the clarion call of the Republican, sounding across the morning sky. Tax cut, tax cut, tax cut, tax cut. It’s a call that would be immediately recognizable emerging from every Republican office on Capitol Hill, where Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell are screaming it loudly to avoid hearing anything about the unfolding indictments from Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Except Trump spoils his effort at just-the-important-stuff purity by taking on a call for people to also focus on “Democrat corruption.” He can’t drop the genuinely fake story of Hillary Clinton’s Russia connections long enough to even make a point. Because, after all, this is Donald Trump. The point of everything is to to hurt or humiliate someone.

At least he could make this a little more believable by saying that the proof of Hillary Clinton’s America-hate is that she conspired with Russia to get Donald Trump elected, knowing what damage that would do to the nation. Now that’s a conspiracy theory scary enough for Halloween.

But here, have a treat.

Watching the developments unfold on the large television screens installed in his private residence, Trump was “seething,” according to a Republican close to the White House.
