Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has released his 1982 calendar and it is by all appearances valid. But rather than exonerating him on the allegations of sexual assault brought against him by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, it’s giving them more credence. The same is true of the new allegations from Julie Swetnick in her sworn legal declaration.
In the case of Ford’s allegations, there’s this entry for July 1. “Go to Timmy’s for skis w/Judge, Tom, PJ, Bernie, Squi [?].” That “skis” is very likely slang for “brewskis.” Because that’s exactly what beer was called by American teen-age boys in the 1980s. Ford claims that Mark Judge and PJ were at the party where she was attacked, remembering there were four boys at the party. It’s not proof of Ford’s allegations, but it certainly provides no alibi for Kavanaugh.
Then there’s the “Beach Week” on his calendar, the second week of June. In her legal declaration, Swetnick discusses Kavanaugh’s conduct toward girls, describing “crude sexual comments to them,” “demeaning” them, “pressing girls against him,” “attempting to remove or shift girls’ clothing to expose private body parts.” She says “I have been told by other women that this conduct also occurred during the Summer months in Ocean City, Maryland, on numerous occasions. I also witnessed such conduct on one occasion in Ocean City, Maryland, during ‘Beach Week.'” She doesn’t specifically say which week this happened.
Then there’s her explosive allegation, that at house parties attended by Kavanaugh and Judge, drinks were spiked with drugs or grain alcohol in order to incapacitate girls and gang rape them. She says she was one of their victims, and that Kavanaugh and Judge were perpetrators of her rape. She says, importantly that “Shortly after the incident, I shared what had transpired with at least two other people. During the incident, I was incapacitated without my consent and unable to fight off the boys raping me.”
That’s corroborated by an account in the New Yorker story with broke the story of Kavanaugh’s college antics from Deborah Ramirez. Jane Mayer and Ronan Farrow reported an account from Judge’s girlfriend in college, Elizabeth Rasor, recounting that “Judge had told her ashamedly of an incident that involved him and other boys taking turns having sex with a drunk woman.” Judge didn’t name the others involved, she said.
None of this condemns Kavanaugh, but in releasing the calendar that’s meant to be his alibi, he’s actually implicated himself. If Mitch McConnell and Chuck Grassley had any principles, had any integrity, they’d call a halt to this process now. They’d demand an investigation. More to the point, if Brett Kavanaugh had any integrity, if he had an ounce of respect for the office to which he’s been nominated, he would demand it to clear his name. He won’t, and with that he has damned himself.
