Michael Cohen resigned his position as the Republican National Committee Deputy Finance Chair, citing the extreme stress caused by the Mueller and the SDNY investigations. Per TalkingPointsMemo:
“This important role requires the full time attention and dedication of each member. Given the ongoing Mueller and SDNY investigations, that simply is impossible for me to do,” he reportedly wrote in the letter addressed to RNC chair Ronna McDaniel.
Cohen also made it a point to distance himself from Trump by condemning the current occupant’s family separation policy:
“As the son of a Polish holocaust survivor, the images and sounds of this family separation policy is heart wrenching,” Cohen wrote, according to ABC. “While I strongly support measures that will secure our porous borders, children should never be used as bargaining chips.”
I also recommend that you read an article, published today, in the Washington Post. In it, a Cohen friend and confidante explains Cohen’s current state of mind:
“He knows a lot of things about the President and he’s not averse to talking in the right situation,” one of Cohen’s New York friends who is in touch with him told CNN. “If they want information on Trump, he’s willing to give it.”
Cohen is formally distancing himself from Trump, and he is spitting venom at his former boss because the occupant has not offered to pay his legal bills. Cohen is pissed at Trump for abandoning him. And TPM’s Josh Marshall sees the attempt at separation as a sign that Cohen is ready to roll over. I certainly hope so. Donald Trump is a scourge that needs removed from the collective imagination of the American people. And it needs to happen soon.
